side by side vs over and under

Either one will look like a dual cannon if pointed at you. Those side by side or over under holes look really big on both also. LOL I imagine my concentration and thoughts would not be is it an o/u or a s/s.

I have never seen an O/U with a short barrel, i.e., a "coach gun". Do they actually exist?

I don't want to look down the barrel of any firearm, especially a shotgun, but I think there is no difference in "intimidation factor".

Then, again, if I am holding the shotgun when someone breaks into my home he will have very little time to consider the intimidation factor. Jus sayin'.............

The closest I've seen is the Mossberg Maverick.

I once had a cute little Spanish SxS, sidelock 20 ga. that intimidated a lot of grouse, woodcock and cottontails. For some reason I traded it for an Ithaca Deerslayer in 20 ga., which also gathered in a lot of game, including whitetails. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the trade was made because the barrels were regulated to only about 30 yds. It was kinda frustrating on longer shots.

A couple of years ago, I bought a Stoeger Double Defense O/U 20 ga. for My Lady and clipped the stock a bit for her. 20" fixed imp. cyl. barrels, pic rails on each side of the barrels and one on top near the receiver. 3" chambers. The whole thing is matte black, including the walnut stocK and forearm. Just extractors, though. OAL is 35.5". I added a military leather sling with QD swivels for carry convenience.

It is one mean looking little mama, and performs well with all loads up to 000 Buck and slugs. With a light on it, it provides a great welcome for marauding raccoons and... such ;).

And shot does not cross at 30 yards. It is intimidating.

I have both kinds but I don’t make decisions on shot gun use on how they work at holding people at gun point. I suggest you try to avoid having to do that all.

Regards, Porkie

I don't have a clue about intimidating, but I grew up hunting with an over and under so just prefer the more narrow forearm for my own shooting. The wider side by sides just never felt as natural to me.

Have you ever seen a 'budget' O/U? Cheap SxS are fairly common, even the coach guns, hammer or hammerless.

Rob

The Russians and South Americans have put out some cheapo over and unders, but just like the side by sides, they're best avoided if it's something you're going to put a lot of rounds through.

There was a cut down O/U in a movie, but I can not reall which one :(

I have always liked the look of the coach gun.

A few years back, I came across a 12 Gauge SxS that had been damaged in a robbery attempt. The barrels had been pinched in a safe door a few inches in front of the foreend. The store owner let me buy it very cheap so I converted it into an NFA compliant 11" Coach gun

It is currently cylinder bore, but as a protection gun, inside the house, that is more than sufficient. It is not like we are shooting Trap with this one, or hunting geese.

It is just for fun. As a fun gun, I probably would have preferred a 20 Gauge, but we take what fate hands us.

For just messing around we use the 1 3/4" Aguilla mini shot shells in the bird shot load.

If I was worth a darn at woodworking I probably would have cut the stock back to a birds head grip
