I was in the market for another 45 pistol Saturday, I went to my local gun dealer and picked put a M&P 45 mid size. After the purchase I went to their indoor range to try out my new S&W. The groups were bad, 4 to 5 inches at 15 yards, I went upstairs and got one of the store employees to show them how bad the pistol was shooting. The first thing I heard was that it was me and not the pistol, luckly I had my 4566 with me and politely demonstrated that I was able to shoot 1 to 1.5 inch groups with my old police trade in. They offered me another pistol or my money back, I choose a Sig P220 carry SAO. I was very surprised on how much better my 4566 shoot compared to the M&P 45. My personal belief is the 3rd gen pistols are much better made than the M&P line.

Comparing apples to oranges. It is not fair to compare a DAO trigger to a single action trigger. You should have compared the M&P trigger and group size to similar Glock. Different trigger takes some getting used to.

The trigger stroke of the M&P is much like that of a DA revolver. I could have made the same demonstration you did when first issued the M&P. The different trigger action requires more attention to form, but you could have achieved the same results with practice.

I carried 4 digit Smiths from 1991 to 2006 on and off duty. I personally feel the M&P to be a much better combat weapon. On the other hand, don't think I'll be dropping too many plates at 100 yards with one.
