side plate removal

I bought another 65-4 357 mag. and was wondering what the procedure for removing the side plate for cleaning and inspection would be. are things going to come flying out? I do most all of my own smithing on my guns, but I have never had one of these revolvers apart. not knowing how clean it is inside bothers me a little, so if anyone could talk me through it I would really appreciate it. I am fairly literate mechanically speaking, i am a tig welder and metal fabricator, just never dealt with this before.Thank you and maybe someday someone will have a problem that i can help with.

remove the grips and the 3 screws holding the side plate on. Hold the gun with the side plate facing upwards and firmly tap on the grip frame near the side plate with a rubber mallet or screwdriver handle. The plate will work itself off. DO NOT PRY IT OFF. The only thing that might pop out will be the hammer block. It fits in a groove on the side plate.
 
First thing I would do is get either (or both) a Kunhausen shop manual on S&W revolvers and/or the Jerry Miculek video on Trigger Job. Both explain the disassembly of the revolver. It isn't difficult, just knowing what order and what to watch for.

Do not attempt it without obtaining good well fitting screwdrivers. To remove the side plate, remove all three (or 4 depending on age) side plate screws. Keep them in the correct order of which hole they came out of, as they usually are different length (the front screw that holds in the cylinder yoke is fitted). When all screws are removed, (& grips removed), and holding the gun in the left hand (right handed person) with the thumb gently resting on the side plate, tap the inner portion of the grip frame several times and you will see the side plate begin to lift up. Keep tapping until it pop's off. DO NOT pry anywhere on the side plate. The hammer block will probably fall out, it is held in place by the side plate. Until you read up or see the video, I would discourage any further removal of parts. Also, the removal of the recoil spring guide is made easier with the aid of a special tool, especially the re-installation.

With just the side plate off, it is easy to see how dirty and if any further cleaning is needed. Spraying with a good de-greaser )brake & parts cleaner) and blowing out with air, (be careful), you can re-lube it but do so sparingly. S&W's are made to run with minimal lube.
 
Step away from your revolver, and put your hands up!!!!
Until you have a fitted set of screwdrivers, do not do this...ask me how I know..I buggered up some screws years ago, it doesn't take much to mess 'em up....and it's hard to live with the embarrassment....
 
Sideplate

Unless I HAVE to do this, I do not remove the sideplate on my Smiths.

Only when I buy a used gun and there is evidence it has already been done, i.e. screwdriver marks on the screw slots, the tell tale white outline around the screw from the blade scraping the metal, or any "peening" around the sideplate seam, do I do it to check for "tinkering". I had to remove the plate from my 10-5 because of a kitchen table gunsmith job I had to un-screw up. This gun is a prime example of how NOT to remove a sideplate, the previous owner left heavy pry marks inside the plate from a screwdriver,and also on the frame to the left of the hammer, inside the frame........ and it looks like he had the plate off 1,000 times. It fits so loosely now I just unscrew the screws and it falls off. The screws were so galled one of them crumbled the first time I took it apart, and the rear flat screw barely had enough slot left to get it off. I had to track down 3 new screws for it, they were so badly damaged. These screws are not always easy to find.

I talked to a guy once who said he removes the sideplate every time he cleans the gun.......there is NO need to be this thorough! I know a lot of us have been in the service, and some still feel the need to "GI" their guns after they shoot and break them down to every last part and sterilize them.......this does more damage than good.

I have several used Smiths, mostly ex-police guns, that only show damage to the yoke screw indicating the cylinder was removed for cleaning. If I do not feel the sideplate has ever been removed I am content to just put a few drops of Kroil down the hammer face and one in the bolt stop slot. Whenever I remove a sideplate I still "sweat blood" and I hate to do this, and I have not "broken the seal" on a Smith yet that hasn't already had this done. I feel once the factory fits the sideplate, and then it's removed it never quite has that seam-less airtight look to it. Even the most careful removal and reinstallation of the plate leaves that tiny hair of "peen" on the seam.

Most of my ex-cop guns have had the sideplate removed, probably by the police armorer for annual inspection or maintenance. Both of the Smiths I have that have been in my family since the 80's have never had the plates off and probably never will. I don't plan to ever shoot these two enough that they will ever require a new hand or bolt stop........that's the reason I buy $200 police trade in Model 10's!

For example the sideplate on my 64-3 is so tight you can hardly see the seam, and unless something ever breaks inside it will stay this way.

Unless you have confidence (warranted or not), I tend to agree you shouldn't be doing risky things to your revolvers.

I take a different approach, I generally remove the sideplate on every revolver I buy. The reasons are pretty simple, I don't trust the factory or the prior owners. History has proven the others just don't seem to care. I've found grit and machining chips in the works of my still favorite carry gun, about 12 years ago when it was new. It had some odd looking green oilish stuff coming out every time I dry fired it. So I pulled it down and low and behold all the garbage from some machining operation was still inside. It took maybe 5 or 10 minutes to bring it up to my standards.

With older revolvers, all kinds of sin's can be found. About 8 or 10 years ago we were sitting behind a table at a tiny gun show with my pards, Joe and Glen. I'd bought a revolver with a sticky cylinder stop. We had good light, time to burn, and I had a full bottle of CLP. So I just ran the screws out and instead of hitting the grip frame (the preferred method) I just dry fired double action a dozen time until the sideplate magically arose from the frame. It horrified old Glen, he was sure I'd never get the thing back together again. But when I got it open, I found a bunch of old solidified grease. It doesn't take much CLP and a little time to make it squeaky clean. And I then proceeded to slop it back together. My pards were amazed I could do that tiny bit of mechanical work. I was just happy I had the good light, a flat table, and some solvent.

Other times with misbehaving guns, I've found a bunch of powder residue where it shouldn't have been. Mostly though its just a bunch of old oil. My advice, whenever someone has a gun that seems to have a problem inside, is to really clean it. Yes, disassembly is the best answer, and anytime your gun is balky, just clean it before you tell anyone or seek professional guidance.

Blasting the action from the bottom or down the cocked hammer slot can work, but it will also miss most of the embedded grime. And the way to oil your gun is NOT to just run some oil down the action. My guess is that's how much of the problems develop. Remember these are the good times. In the past everyone didn't use quality gun oil. They used 3 in 1, or mom's sewing machine oil, or anything else they could find out in the garage. Some of it might have been OK if it had been used by itself. But I fear other compounds may have reacted with either the current choices of lubricants, or maybe they even break down the good stuff. The results seem to be jelled oil which later hardens into something that appears to be amber (petrified tree sap.) The only way to remove that stuff is by direct attack.
 
I have had a Smith 637 for eight years and a 686+ for four. Although I shoot them weekly, I have never taken the side plates off and don't plan to do it unless I have a compelling reason.

Be aware that the second youtube post in suckerrus' post above does not discuss or show any of the safety checks that must be done after messing with springs. Swapping out springs can disable the safeties designed into the S&W revolver action. Swapping springs when you don't know what you are doing can result in a very dangerous gun.

Wondering why someone without knowledge would take the sideplate of his S&W? Just because the screws are there? Better idea is take the valve covers off your car engine and see what is under there... How many guys take Colt and Ruger revolvers apart?
 
Years ago I read that you should take off the sideplate and clean the internals on a new gun because there was usually grit and dirty grease left from the factory. I did this for a while with several new guns. There was usually grit and dirty grease. I used Gun Scrubber to clean out the mess and re-oiled with Breakfree CLP.

This should only be done using properly fitting gunsmith screwdrivers. The heads on gunsmith screwdrivers are different and completely fill the slot. Secondly, only remove the sideplate by tapping the handle after removing the screws. Never pry the plate off.

I don't know that it really made any difference, but I was happy that it was cleaner.
 
Oil

I use only Eezox and have been for years, it does not react with carbon to create a gunk and as far as I know it does not react with other oils or grease.

One gun that comes to mind is a Colt Police Positive I bought, it had a very hard DA and SA action and the cylinder rotated sluggishly even when open and out of the frame. I took off the yoke screw and found what appeared to be decades old dried grease on the cylinder pin. I cleaned it off, put on a drop of Eezox and it was as tight and slick as the day it was made. It is an old Sheriff gun from the 30's, I'm guessing Deputy Smith back in the day put some axle grease on it to keep it "slick" and back then there weren't all the hi-speed oils we have today, and so years later it hardened into a gunk.
