Hello,

Does anyone know where I could get one Power Custom sideplate shim for a hammer on a 1937 Brazilian? There are rub marks on the left side of the hammer. I didn't want to buy a package of ten.

Thanks!

Take a look at the clearance opposite where you're getting the rub marks. If you have clearance, maybe a thousandth or so more than you might expect, it might mean that the hammer pin is a tiny bit askew. Try tapping with a wooden or rubber mallet the hammer in the opposite direction of the rub marks to equalize the clearances.

danski,

Thanks, I'll give that a try after I put it back together. I am giving it a thorough cleaning. It was pretty cruddy inside.

All of the parts are out of the frame. I am currently soaking them. This revolver has what I think is excessive side-to-side cylinder movement with the hammer down and back with the trigger pulled. So I ordered an oversize cylinder stop and the MIM cylinder stop from Brownells. I have never fitted one so I guess slow and careful will be the way to go. I took this picture when I removed the sideplate.

I have had this S&W for about 20 years. Haven't shot it much. I would like to though.

It's hard to see in the picture, but it looked like stuff was growing in there

You might as well buy a package. It may hypothetically take one shim on left of hammer and two on right. It may also take some trigger shims. These aren't the same product, so you get to buy I package of each. The Powers shims do work VERY well. The end desired result is to have both the trigger and hammer centered in their travel area when the side plate is secrured, but not held so tightly as to put friction on either. A little fit and try is required.

minconrevo,

Thanks for the reply. I did end up ordering two packages; one of each shim. They should be here later this week. I will still need to fit a new cylinder stop.

Let's call all of this a learning experience.

I'll let everyone know how things turn out when I am finished.

It is back together. I used one of the hammer sideplste shims and that seems to have given the hammer the clearance it needed.

I also installed one of the cylinder stops I ordered.

There is an update and pictures here: Update

Thanks,

Rick

Trigger shims
You need be to careful of the trigger shims,I speak from personal experience, With use the trigger shims will wear through and lock the trigger. This happened twice so I change them out every few thouand rds.

Thanks for the heads-up Jim. I just used the one hammer shim, but I will keep an eye on it. Since I bought a full packages of both shims, I will have extras to swap it out as needed.

Thanks again.
