Sig p220 38 super

....I also had a P229 in .357 Sig for a while. .... I only sold it because it was getting very expensive to feed when I could even find the ammo. I figure a P220 in .38 Super would be a good compromise.

My solution to that problem was to get a .40 S&W barrel to swap with the .357 SIG barrel. That provides for much cheaper practice. The POI is close enough for practice, and recoil is similar. If you want POI to be the same, complete slide assemblies are offered.

I spoke with a Sig rep at the NRA show a couple of years ago and asked if there was a chance of more .38 Supers. He said they planned to release the P220 in .38 Super and 10MM. The 10MM has come out, but no .38 Super.

That would be really good news... if it happens.

SIG has been going almost overboard with making all sorts of variations within their product line. While calibers other than the established 9/357/40/45 are more involved than cosmetic changes, SIG has still shown they are trying to meet customer demand.

I'm waiting for a P220 10mm that meets my criteria, and also hoping the P225A1 will be offered in 357 SIG. A P220 in 38 Super would be welcome. That would leave only the Holy Grail cartridge left, the .30 Luger that was initially offered in the early P220 days. Might have to do the next best thing and get a custom aftermarket barrel.

And doesn't the Sig technically have an arched grip also?

The arch was a bit more pronounced on the P220 with the side button mag release than it was on the earlier heel release and the Browning BDA.

Texas Star, having owned a couple of Colts with the old style barrels, I always wondered how those Pre War Super Matches could have displayed anything like match accuracy. My 38 Super Colts, made in the '70s, were dismal! Replacing the barrel in my Government Model with one headspacing on the case mouth solved all accuracy and other issues associated with those old style barrels. Appreciated your comments on your experience with Super Match accuracy.
Tmnguuyen, I've used some of the types of ammo shown in your photo. I suspect the ammo by major manufacturers will work fine. Don't know about the white box 147 grain as I'm unfamiliar with that type. FWIW, I recently chronographed some of that Armscor 125 grain ammo in my Colt Special Combat Govt. with 5" barrel. It was the slowest and least accurate of the the several types of 38 Super ammo I've been shooting lately. Only averaged 1130 fps. Not much better than some generic 9mm ball I've tested. The Remington 130 ball averages 1200+ fps in a 5" barrel, as will the Federal American Eagle in my guns. The Winchester 125 Silvertip averaged only 1160 to 1175 fps tested in several different 5" guns.

I kept an eye out for a 9mm or 38 Super P220 with "American" style mag release at gun shops and big and small gun shows for ages, but never ran across even one of either caliber. In the fullness of time, I did acquire two unfired P220 9mms off different forums and have 1911 style Supers I enjoy shooting and reloading for. BTW, to realize the ballistic superiority of the Super over 9mm, you pretty much have to go to boutique ammo like Underwood, CorBon, Buffalo Bore, etc, or reload. Anyway, the P220s are fine pistols in any caliber. Enjoy!
