It’s that time again. I’m looking at possibly adding another .45 to the family. Although, I love the classic look of a 1911, I am partial to the DA/SA platform. Does anyone have experience with this gun? Also, (in addition to H&K and CZ) are there other guns in this category I should consider? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I bought one several years ago from CDNN. It was a 2 tone with the slide nickeled. It was advertised as being from the Texas DPS. I shot it well and it fed all of my reloads perfectly. I found it too big and I wanted to stay with the 1911 genre. I sold it to a friend and my handyman and he still has it.

I have owned one for many years, maybe mid- 90's model with a single action break near like smooth glass and as accurate as a match pistol(I used to build n.m. 1911A1s' for the pistol section at Quantico, Va) and it is the only Sig I have left although they were all very similar in accuracy and the quality I have found to be exceptional- I participated in a rebuild/inspection and repair of over 5,000 government P229s' at Rock Island as a govt small arms repair contractor and they will take a beating as well ... and repair is fairly easy-excellent pistols and I think the P220 will stay with me until I can no longer lift it!

You can never have too many 45s no matter what platform they are built around

I have been shooting P220s since 1977. That first one is on the bottom right in this image

I carried one for many years. One night mine saved my life and took two wanted felons off the street at the same time

These are exceptionally good firearms, accurate and reliable. The Sport pistols from the MasterShop in Germany have to be shot to be believed

Not all of my P220s are chambered for 45ACP. There is 9MM, 38SUPER and 10MM Auto. plus I have a threaded 22LR upper for some quiet time

I have grown fond of the 5" P220s in more recent years, the extra weight of the stainless steel frames adds additional dampening to the recoil pulse of whatever they are chambered in . I also like the adjustable sights

My other choices would be the SIG P227 or just aout anything in the HK USP family

I have a CZ97BD, but I am not drawn to it like the P200 or USP families. Don't get me wrong, it is well manufactured, accurate and reliable. It is just missing that intangible that makes you (or at least me) Love a pistol. Perhaps it is because I already own P220s and USPs

While I don't have experience with one in that caliber, Beretta offers their full-size PX4 Storm pistol in .45ACP. It can be converted to decock-only without too much trouble, if that suits you.

FWIW, I have a Compact in 9mm, and I really like it. It's been my EDC for a couple of years now.

Might be worth checking out.

Thanks

Thanks Continental. I will check these out.

Sarsilaz K2 45. Turkish made, 14-round, CZ97 clone. Finish is maybe a little fragile, but I got mine for under $400 new from CDNN. Grip is big, and there's no decocker.

Hmmmmm.....I have been thinking about those, although I dearly love decockers. I need a full size .45 ACP in the stable. Or I think that I do, anyway.

Stoeger used to make a Couger in .45 ACP but I am not sure that they are available any longer. Isn't Beretta's PX-4 their polymer answer to the Cougar? I could live with one of those Berettas methinks! ;)

No Glock triggers for me; I like TDA pistols or striker fired pistols that resemble TDAs.

Nope, completely different internal design. The Stoeger Couger was a lower cost alternative to the Beretta 8000 Series, which was basically just a shrunken down version of the Beretta 92 platform, which in turn traces it's lineage back to the design of the Walther P38. However, the 8000 Series differed from the 92 platform due to having a completely different barrel locking mechanism which utilized a rotating barrel as opposed to the 92 Platform's P38-inspired falling block design.
The Beretta PX-4 is has a completely different design of which the only similarity is the rotating barrel of the Beretta 8000 Series, with the same trigger/safety as the 92 Series.

I’ve had 2 P220s for quite a few years; one a P220 carry DA/SA, and the other is a P220 Super Target which is SAO.

Both have been extremely reliable, and accurate pistols that are a pleasure to shoot and I have fired a total of several 10s of thousands of rounds through them with the lion’s share going through the Super Target.

I have several sigs and enjoy them all . I recently had the opportunity to shoot a P220 in 45 acp . It had , absolutely the worst trigger I have ever encountered . It was very very stiff in D/A . I was very disappointed . I had been interested in getting one but decided I had better check it out in person before buying . I would not buy one on-line unless I was prepared , if necessary to have a trigger job done .Yes , I'm still in the market for a 2nd semi auto in 45 acp , besides the Sig 1911 that I already have and that has a wonderful trigger , S/A only of course . Regards Paul

I have a number of pistols and revolvers in .45ACP, most of which are Colt 1911s in various configurations. Like Kanewpadle, I don't like DA/SA handguns...never been able to get used to them. Last year, I bought a SIG P220 Legion in Single Action Only, and it's quickly become my favorite .45.

First, it's ergonomically great...fits my hand perfectly. Secondly, it's both extremely accurate and easy to shoot well. The sight picture is clean and sharp. You can manipulate the slide with the thumb safety on. And it's typically SIG, in that it's beautifully made and costs more than comparable pistols. But...you get what you pay for.

I pasted the below photo from SIG's website. My pistol is almost identical to this one, the one difference being that mine has a flat trigger. (Great feature, by the way.)

I can't say anything bad about the 220...if you buy one, I think you'll love it. Good luck... :)

Cedar, you have nothing to fear from a P220, no matter what vintage you find. The original matte-blued slides need care from corrosion , but that's about it. I carried an original alloy -framed American release for several years as my duty-gun. Shot a few 300's with it, too. Find yourself a deal, then get to wringing-out your preferred ammo with it
