Sig P220

At $595, I put this on layaway just the other day.
Sig P220 Two Tone.
It's listed as stainless but the salesman and I are thinking that it's really nickle.
Either way, it's a nice older, German made pistol.

This will be my second P220 and third Sig (I have a P6 also).
These guns make me feel like a better shooter than I probably am. :o

Have a chance to pick up a 220 for $600.. First Sig. Thoughts on the gun and price?

Great guns.

What caliber? .45 ACP, 9MM, .38 Super, .22LR or .30 Luger?

What type of magazine release (American or European heel type)?

New or used?

If used, is it Sig certified pre-owned?

Trigger type? DA/SA, DAO, DAK, SAO, SRT?

If used, do you get the box, manual, test target and extra magazines?

I've seen a LOT of used P220's sell over the years. Some as cheaply as $299 for mechanically perfect, cosmetically challenged .45ACP PD trade in pistols with 2X magazines.

If the pistol in question is a 9MM or .38 Super with an American magazine release, $600 could be a steal.

There are a LOT of different P220 variants out there and the values have a wide spread. Some have a rail, some don't, some are two tone, some have night sights, different stocks, and even the country of manufacture and importer markings can make a difference to a Sig collector.

Thanks, M1Garandy,
Good questions...info I know:
-45 acp
-DA/SA
-made in W. Germany
-not sure if Sig certified
-box and mags included
-regular black matted finish

Does this help?
Thanks!

Sure does.

If the pistol in question comes in a cardboard box with an insert or a black plastic factory box, I don't know how to tell if it was sold as CPO or not. However, if it was sold recently enough to come in a blue or red plastic case (and the S/N on the case matches the pistol) blue means it was sold as new and red means it was factory refurbed and sold as a CPO (as best I can recall).

Are the magazines with the pistol stainless steel or blued/parkerized? Most of the factory blued/parkerized magazines are 7 rounds. SS magazines with a thin base pad are 8 rounders but extended factory 10 rounders are available.

Used at the gun show, you might get lucky and find factory magazines for $10-20 each. A new factory SS 8 rounder will generally set you back around $40 IF you can find any.

Being marked W. Germany makes it a little more sought after.

A couple of things to check, do the S/N's on the frame, slide and barrel all match (if the barrel and slide have S/N's)?

Another thing to check is the frame rails. They start out black like the rest of the frame. As they wear, they turn gold and then silver once both the finish and the anodizing have worn through. If there is much gold or silver showing on the frame rails, you might want to pass.

I also saw a P220 once with a leg broken off of the locking insert near the trigger pivot pin. Not sure if it failed in service, was installed incorrectly or if bubba did it. In any case, replacement locking inserts are expensive!

If everything checks out, a W.German P220 in .45 ACP without night sights or a rail and with 2X 8 round magazines for $600 does not seem too extreme.

I saw a W.German P220 locally for a bit less but I'm not sure what it comes with.

Oh, one more thing, Sig slides are date coded. There should be two letters stamped on the bottom of the slide under the muzzle. Once decoded, it'll tell you when the pistol was made.

Congratulations the P220 is an excellent SIG pistol and I have a 1996 model Sig P220 and a Sig P220R SAO that I like better than the full size P220. The SAO trigger is awesome and the best I encountered on a Sig from the factory.

Merry Christmas all!

By now you know the P220 is a fine firearm

I bought my first one 37 years ago and still own and shoot it. Since that day I have added several more.

When the choice is mine, I carry a P220 on my side. They are accurate and reliable.

Sig P220s have shipped in 6 different calibers over the years with a seventh (10MM Auto) about to be added next year.

As to price, without knowing condition, it is not possible to say if that is a good or bad deal or an average deal.

Basically ANY P220 in good operating and cosmetic condition is worth $600.

Carrying my W. German right now. Here is a good way to tell year of manufacturing

For instance, my date code is KF which is 1995. This means that while slide was made pre 1991 my pistol was actually put together in 95

That's cool! Mine is KB - 1991, just like it should be.

OK, so I couldn't wait to make payments over 4 months, so I hit up the savings account and went and paid off the P220. :o

I hope the OP has done the same thing!!
Edit: Here's a pic after I cleaned it up a bit!

Great gun. I've got a West German P226 and it's superb. Can anyone tell me why Sig went from the internal to the external extractor?

Good find; some say you can find them cheaper but with today's crazy markets, that is not too bad IMO, especially if it is an older one. Like everything else they refuse to make them how they used too.

P220s are awesome and I'd love to carry one for duty. Superb fit, finish, trigger pulls and awesome accuracy right out of the box.

I went and dug out my 2 german sigs and neither has the date code on them, got me all excited for nothing ! You did say it was for w. Germany but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. On the Montage Suisse I did find a backwards 3 and a p on the barrel and slide, I don't know what that means either.

Good luck. Great pistols. I am still looking for that early 1980s late 1970s Sig P220. I Just want one that old as it came out in W Germany when I was stationed there. I have a W. German Sig P6 from 1984. Best 9mm I own.
