Hi Everyone; So I was laying in bed last night thinking about my Sport, yeah I guess I am becoming demented also. :D When it struck me, the other day I went out shooting and did real well off hand @ 100yrds. In fact as was stated I was well within a Minute Of Bad Guy (MOBG) but when I set out to purchase myself an AR, I really had two specific targets in mind other than paper. Coyotes and Prairie Dogs, well MOBG works with Coyotes but is a far cry from Minute Of Prairie Dog (MOPD) especially as most shots will be taken @ 125 to 150 yrds. My GripPod is on its way, and I can use it over the hood or on the side of my pickup bed but still MOBG is not MOPD. I had a Tasco 3x9 that I had taken off of a Mauser 98 that has Lyman Target Sights on now and I wondered??? Well it boresighted nicely and I may want to get taller mounts but I dont know, anyway here is my girls new look:

Does that front sight interfere with seeing through that scope at all? It looks nice on that gun to by the way. I didnt figure a big scope would look good on a AR but looks pretty good to me.

Is the front bell of the scope touching the handguard? I put my Leupold on my Sport after I put a Quad-rail GMG handguard and had to shim the mounts ever so slightly to keep it from touching.
As far as seeing the front sight, yes and no. As far as my set-up, I could faintly see it. I debated about putting just a gas block on it but ultimately just cut off the sight. I figure that I can always replace it but with the quad rail I won't have to if I go back to iron sights.(bad eyes slim chance;))
I didn't intend to hijack your thread btw.:o

The Scope doesnt touch anywhere, in fact the see-thru scope covers dont touch anywhere. Getting to the charging handle is a little tricky so I have ordered a flat top riser. Also I need it a little higher to get the scope to line up with my normal cheek weld. You really have to get off center in the scope before you see a slight shadow of the front sight but I think that the riser will fix that also. I have other firearms for MOBG shooting, I really wanted a 223/5.56x45 for prairie dogs. My 17hmr is pretty good on them and believe it or not my old Marlin Model 60 is death on them but they have become accustomed to being shot at so I needed something that would be fun and give me more range and knockdown. Dad is putting a scope on his AR15A3 and I looked through it last night and thats when the wheels in my head started spinning. I will post another pic when I get the riser installed but I do like the scope on it. I will leave the front sight alone because my situation may change and become MOBG instead of MOPD!! :)

p.s. I spent about 3 hours looking at accessories on the web for my M&P15 last night and almost every night since I got her.

I have ordered the lower rail for the front handguard (installed)
the rear adaptor plate for a 1 point sling (coming)
the grippod bipod/front hand grip (coming)
a pistol grip to replace the one that came with the gun (coming)
the vise blocks upper and lower (coming)
the riser for the scope (coming)
a bunch of ammo (some has come, some is coming)
a carrying case (here)
a 1 point sling (here)
And if my wife new she would shoot me!!!!LOL but she went a got a smart phone yesterday so I am hoping when she does find out she wont be too mad!! :D

Also...I like the 20 round magazine, it keeps me from burning ammo at too fast a rate although I keep both 30's loaded also.

As long as the objective bell of the scope isn't touching the rifle, you should be good to go with the rings you have. The idea is to get the scope as close as possible to the center-line of the bore. You'll realize much better elevation adjustment as a result.

As far as accuracy goes, get a GI web sling, and learn how to use it. That will vastly improve your accuracy. A G.I. web sling shouldn't cost you much more than $15. Your rifle will need sling swivels to make use of the sling.

Finally, using a 20-round mag is a good idea, not to save ammo, but more to allow a wider range of vertical movement of the rifle from the prone position (or shooting from a bench). When I'm shooting at the range, I use 20-round mags because we're not allow to shoot offhand.

Sounds like you're having some fun Oneyeopn! I love the 20 round magazine. I've never found a use for the 30 (I'll load it and save it for when the zombies come...I guess). With my bench set up, the 30 rounder gets in the way. And I'm too damn cheap/poor to be dumping 30 rounds without a really good reason. I just put a 3x9 Nikon on my Sport using Burris x-treme tactical extra tall rings. Pretty sweet!:D

The Sport has a front and a rear sling swivel, I wanted the third one behind the receiver for when I am out PD hunting, but I have used the military web sling many times and I think I still remember how to use it, but it is a good idea to get one. I will put it high on my list. I almost forgot what I was going to ask, are the sling swivels on the sport appropriate for the GI sling or do they require a different one, seems to me that they are the right ones.

It's sounds like to me you're getting set up quite nicely! I sure enjoy my leetle friend. It was the darned 15-22s that got me to this point.:D

Regards,

Hobie

I actually prefer 10-round magazines. I keep the 7 30-rounders loaded at home, but when I go to the range I usually just use my 10-rounder.

The more I look at your rifle the better I like it. Did you have any problems sighting in with your front scope mount being on the handguard? My cousin (the USMC armorer told me that when shooting the carbine vs the rifle that the carbine tends to lose accuracy after 600 yrds. How has your experience been shooting distance? And what kind of muzzle brake is that?:)

Sorry for the delay. Work. 4 letter word.:)
Actually, all I got accomplished was to get sighted in, sort of.
Weather got nasty, work's interfered:rolleyes: and I haven't got back to the range for a while now. I'm going to be interested if heating will shift the POA with the hand guard moving a bit. Hopefully, I'll get to post some results very soon.
The muzzle brake is from Tacticool who frequents the 15-22 forum here. I originally bought it just to look cool on my 15-22P, knowing that the effect would be neglible on a .22LR.
So, when I bought my Sport, I thought what the heck, put it on. Have I noticed a difference so far? Not a whit, but hey it looks cool.:D:D:D

More to come on this whole thing when I get more light after work and the creek don't rise.:)

Hobie...I do understand. I have a 1" riser to come for my flat top on the sport. I can actually mount it solid on the reciever so I expect that I can mount it on a riser. I dont know if I want to cut off the front sight, probably not, get a gasblock with a rail on it for a flip up front sight. Ihave a trade coming with a box of magazines, grippods and rear milsurp sights plus some other parts, so I am not sure what I am going to do with it. But by next weekend My sport will look completely different, so I dont want to make permanent changes until I figure out how it fits in my scheme of things if that makes sense. But I figure I am going to be making some trades in the near future. I figure I am going to be trading the Milsurp GripPods and the Rear Sights for pieces for my Sport, I just dont and wont know until it happens. :D

Ain't it fun! I love all the things we can do. Wife gives me a cross-eyed look once in awhile but what the heck, after 35 years together, I can handle it....what's that dear? Yes..yes..okay bye.:D

Hobie retiring for the night. Big Wave!

The overall optic is not really affected, because the focus is far beyond the end of the barrel, so it doesn't 'See' the front post much at all. It will usually look like a very small blur under whatever you are focusing on 100yards out.
