Just wanted to ask all the long time SW9VE owners a ammo question. I have had my 9 for about a year and untill now have only put 115 grain fmj ammo through it. Today I bought a box of WWB 147 grain JHP personal protection (non plus p) and wanted to make sure it would be ok in the gun before I shoot it. If I remember correctly, the manual only said no plus p. Thanks in advance.

Shoot it! You're OK with that ammo. Before using it for CC, go to the range and fire some of it. This way you know it functions OK in your sigma.

No +P? Ooops, this is the first I've heard that, is that right? Now what am I to do with the 3 boxes of Winchester +P+ I have?

+P is fine as long as it is shot infrequently. I don't use +P+ in any of my guns, but again a few rounds is no big deal; presuming you are just going to make sure it feeds so you load it up for self defense or home defense. A steady of diet of either is probably not good for you gun.

WWB 147 grain HP

I chose these rounds for my Sigma for HD and they work great. Back in 2002 I bought 250 rounds of it, when to the range and shot all of it without cleaning with zero problems. I have maybe 600 rounds total of the 147 grain though the gun over the years. I just replace the 50 rounds I have every 6 months and shoot the old ones up.

I just got a Kel Tec PF9 for Christmas, and while reading up on it on the Kel Tec forums, the factory itself does not recommend +P ammo, most use it for carry. I'd never given it much thought for my Sigma, hadn't read anything either. Was at the range today, mainly breaking in the PF9, ran about 50 rounds through the Sigma, (practicing drawing from the holster), after I'd finished up the range ammo, fired a mag of Winchester 115gr +P+, quite a difference back to back, those suckers have some 'pop' to 'em! I've decided to try some 124gr and maybe some 147gr standard pressure HPs in the PF9, safe for the gun, and I can practice with the same stuff I carry. Heavier slugs, better penetration, not as much recoil, helpful with a light gun. I guess I'll go the same way with the Sigma. After shooting about 200 rounds with the PF9, the Sigma was a JOY to shoot, not that the PF9 was bad, but it is a bit 'snappy', the Sigma sure is comfortable, and the trigger pull seems shorter now, imagine that!

Heavier slugs, better penetration

Heavier/Slower bullet have less penetration but more energy which is why I like them so much for HD. They will go though less walls which gives you a better backstop. I know this is true for pistol but for rifle its a different story.

I disagree, everything I've read from manufacturers sites, ballistic tests, heavier/slower slugs penetrate better, lighter/faster expand more, (and penetrate less), I am not an expert on this stuff by any means, but that's what I've come up with so far...we do agree on carrying heavier for SD, I still have to do a bit of testing, from using 9mm 115gr +P, I want to use 124, 147gr HPs, standard pressure, safe for the gun, might be a bit easier recoil wise, and I can practice more with the actual ammo I'll be carrying.
