I love to give recommendations for S&W pistols.
I use the Sigmas for trainers and loaners because they are simple and rugged in stock form.. I call the trigger "algebra problem" because it is long and hard much like a DA revolver. It can be lighted somewhat if intended for a range queen, but stock is recommended for defense. IMHO, if you want a lighter trigger, pay a little extra for the SD and don't screw with the Sigma.
If you have extra money, the M&P is a more sophisticated design with more add-on goodies.

Look around on prices; all 3 pistols can be had for less than MSRP. I've seen Sigmas lately for around $300. S&W has a military rebate if you're eligible, and "first responders" prices can be had at some outlets.

Great pistol. I have both the 9VE and the 40VE. Used to carry the 9VE everyday until I picked up a 40VE, now I carry it. They are tough little pistols and will pretty much go bang with every trigger pull. I have over 1500 rounds through my 9 and about 500 through the 40 without a failure yet. For the price, they are one of the best out. The trigger pull is not made for comp shooting, they were made for personal defense. If you are looking for something that you will want to shoot in compititions then go for the M&P or a higher end gun.

I too have the sw9ve and love it .... I have had several other handguns and yet I continue to carry this one the most... I am in search for a few access for it .. and that seems to be a challenge but for the performance and durability this is a great handgun...

To the two new members, welcome to the forum!

I am a sigma fan, but I bought the gun knowing what I was getting.

It's a splendid self defense gun with great ergonomics and a long, heavy, safe trigger design.

It always saddens me when I read that it's much harder to shoot than a Buckmark. It wasn't intended for that. If you're buying it for bullseye shooting, spend some more money and get a more expensive gun.

It does however, do what it was designed to do very well indeed.

Trigger is no issue for me, you can really improve your skills if you discipline yourself to master the sigma.

Lots of fun for me, I like it!

It amazes me everytime I read thread about the Sigma. Complains about heavy trigger and a long pull. The Sigma was designed that way to be a self defense handgun that has less chance of a accidental discharge. At self defense distances its a good reliable pistol. I have a 40VE and its performed very well. I have not done a trigger job. The trigger is fine for me.
My suggestion is go to the local range and rent a Sigma. Put about 100 rounds through the gun and I see how you like. Then you can make a good decision. You may not like the Sigma. But before you buy I would at least try to shoot one first.
Regards,
Howard

I have a 40ev, love it. I did the trigger job within the first 3 hours of getting it. I wanted to fire it first and then decide if I wanted to do the trigger. The trigger job takes less than a minute to do and was well worth it. I have about 17,000 rounds through mine and it has never failed to fire. Just make sure if you are going to put alot of rounds through it to clean it really good afterwards. I know a guy that thought it was just a through away gun and never cleaned it. after about a year it was garbage. It took me alost 5 hours to get it operational again and I even had to replace a coule of springs and take a dremil to clean the loading ramp. But after not cleaning it for a while it will still fire, just dont fire it daily and not clean it.

Hey Vector, was that a typo? 17,000 rounds? Really? If that's the case then my little Siggy is just a pup at only 600!

Was your trigger job taking the pigtail and heavy spring out of the trigger group?

If you come to the Smith and Wesson forum and ask about the Sigma, you are going to get replies like the ones above. It is everything they say it is. If money is tight and this is your first handgun go for it. You can't get a pistol with S&W on it for less.
I owned a Sigma 9mm for a while. It was a great pistol for a beginner.

Good points: It is as accurate as any pistol out there.
Bad points: The trigger pull is not as bad as people say. It will not interfere with the operation of the weapon. But it is a long pull.

It is a great training piece. It was my first handgun. I finally eased the trigger and now it's a house pet. The SD or M&P is a nicer gun.

I bought a SW9VE on a whim. Another deputy had a used one and I gave him $250 for it. I was really surprised how much I liked it. Why? Because I HATE the M&P with a passion. The M&P is garbage, but the Sigma is a little jewel if you accept it for what it is.....a basic reliable pistol. The M&P tries to be all things to all people. The Sigma doesn't. I am not a polymer fanboi, but I do like the way the Sigma fits my hand and the way it functions. Like a Glock, but not like a Glock.

If you want a poly S&W, I would say purchase the Sigma and not the M&P. You can spend the difference on practice ammo.

Sigma

I have owned one for two years now and really like the Sigma, being an old wheel gun person the trigger pull doesn't bother me a bit. I carry a Glock 23 for work. But personnal defense is my S&W either my 9mm or my 357. sigma I like the sights and weight. Mag capacity is good too
with 17 rounds less mags to carry.

CDNN has them for $279,new.You will hear mixed reviews on the Sigma, mostly about the trigger.Just keep feeding it ammo of your choice and the trigger will get better the more you shoot it.Even if you were to buy a used one the prices are usually $200,or less in some cases.Post up some pics if you get one. :)

Honestly almost all plastic or poly semi-autos are about the same break them down and have a look. Personally I prefer my CZ-75 and my EA Witness there is just something about an all metal firearm that just feels right. I bought the Sigma because if I was going to by a plastic pistol I didnt want to buy an overpriced plastic gun.

Dang cbr6864,it feels like your response was the same thing that I was thinking.I too prefer my metal firearms over a poly gun.The Sigma was such a great deal for a plastic gun I could not pass it up.Why pay upwards of $100 or more for the same type gun,IMO.GMTA!

Poly pistols can claim to hold up for 10,000 rounds or whatever their claim is but logic tells you that the weak part will be the plastic. The only reason Glock is so famous is because of Bruce Willis and Die Hard the Glock took off after he mentioned it then you have.

US Marshals...Tommy Lee Jones refers to Robert Downey Jr's gun as a "sissy pistol" and tells him to "'get yourself a Glock."

End of Days... Arnold Schwarzenegger seethed, "Between your faith and my Glock 9 milimeter, I take my Glock."

Then you have R. Lee Emey jumping on the Glock band wagon as well.

Glock spent a fortune on product placement and it was money well spent evident of everyone rushing out to buy a Glock.
Dont get me wrong the Glock is a fine poly gun but so is the Sigma....really if the Sigma is such junk why did Glock file a law suite?

When I bought my Sigma it was a birthday present to me.I was about to buy a fellow gun buddies 3rd gen G22 for $400.While strolling around at the range gun shop I saw the Sigma for $299 and knew I had to have it.Except for the gritty trigger (which is fixed now) I was impressed!

From what i've been reading lately the 4th gen Glocks are having some major FTF problems.I just can't see a LEO pulling his Glock and it has a FTF issue, putting his/her life at risk!

I have a SW9VE and I enjoy it. It's been fitted with night sights and is my HD handgun. It is also my carry gun when I'm driving long distance.

I've always been a revolver owner, but at $298 for a new Sigma .40, I thought I'd give it a try. So far so good. 500+ rounds with no malfunctions, fun to shoot and points well. I like it.
