I think you would have to teach the math teachers how to read a tape measure first.

This is probably a whole 'nother topic, but I agree. For me, digital clocks tell you what time it is, whereas analog clocks tell you what time it isn't.
With the example in the picture below I can tell at a glance that it's about 10 minutes after 10:00 and I've got about 20 minutes to get to my 10:30 appointment.
With a digital clock, I have to quickly do the math in my head.

This strikes close to home: Just yesterday, a friend (in his 70's) called about a project he wanted me to do, it involved measuring. When I asked about the distance, he got a tape measure and said " It is 1 and 5 of those little marks." I asked him if it was 32's, 16ths, or 8ths. He said, "I don't know, I ain't no carpenter."

My 10th grade Geometry teacher could use a slide rule, but nor a yard stick!
Of course, he couldn't tell that his wife was mad at him either. I guess he could read the more important things in life!

As an employer, I have a request for school math teachers. Please do us all a favor and start using a tape measure to teach fractions. Teach the kids how to read and use a tape measure.
Future employers will be eternally grateful.
I did a side by side comparison of three name brand tapes, and found enough differences to explain why my cuts weren't consistent. I've slowly changed over to metric for my wood projects, and it is so much easier - and accurate.

Another vote for metric here. Do like analog clocks though. (And have an analog clock app on my iPhone.)

Anyway, it is so much more important how each student perceives himself or herself, or non-binary self, and how they feel about measuring thingies, whatever they might be.
A high school diploma issued over the past 30 years is no guarantee that the graduate is capable of reading, writing, or performing basic math.
A neighbor is a community college math instructor, says over half of her classes are remedial level. My niece is program director for respiratory therapy at the same school. Students enroll in science-based degree programs with little or no functional literacy, zero math abilities, no concept of weights or measures.
From everything I have seen the public school system is a complete failure.

Most of my high school class could not do fractions back in the 70s. This is nothing new.
They'd be consistent if you stuck to one tape. Might be wrong, but they'd be consistently wrong.
Measuring was my shortcoming. Measure twice, cut once never worked for me. It was more like measure twice, cut once, go get another piece of wood. Carpentry was not in my fate.
Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a piece of chalk, cut it with an axe.
I cut it off three times and it's still too short.
I've got one, use it as a tiny square. The other 95% of its magic goes over my head or isn't needed. A great tool for those in the know.
Had a house to frame and sheath one summer (pre nail guns) It was me and one helper. As hard as I tried I couldn't teach him to read a tape measure and he was my cut man.After he was back in school Pa helped me with the siding. I brought it up again for the umpteenth time and the old man said "Oh yeah,he's dyslexic"…….
Take ant 14 year old and ask them to cut you a 2x4 at.............
3 foot, 9 inches and you could get three or more different lengths.
1. 3'9"
2. 45"
3. 54" etc.
and this was without any add on fractions !!
Don't ask me how I know this !!
Of courde, a killer for a good carpenter, would be if they had, Dyslexia.
