Hello everyone, I've been lurking here around here quite a while learning everything I can about revolvers in general and S&W in particular ever since a buddy of mine showed me his newly acquired 686. I've always been a pure Colt 1911 guy, but when I held my buddy's 686 I decided I was going to add the best damn revolver ever made to my collection. Initially I assumed it would be a python, but after losing a weeks worth of work researching the internet, I concluded that all the colt's are great, but the cost difference didn't equal the value difference. In fact, I've concluded that a lot of knowledgeable folks believe that if you could only own 1 gun, it should be a 686 dash 4 or lower. That said, I scoured gun broker.com looking for a 686, and just brought home the dash 3 in the pic below. It is pristine. You literally couldn't distinguish it from a brand new one off the assembly line. I get a stiffy just holding holding it. It's quality engineering at it's best and I couldn't be happier to own it. It's the coolest thing I own and I own a lot of cool things. Obviously I can't wait to shoot it, but a big part of me wants to build a display case for it and hang it over the fireplace. ok, I'll calm down now. I'd like to learn as much about this weapon as I can, I know that because it's a 3 it was built between 1998 and 1990. I think my serial number is BPH7012, if that's not it I'll need to remove the grips to figure it out. Can you Guru's/Experts provide me any additional info about this gun, at least a most specific date of manufacture? Thanks in advance for all your help and everything I've learned reading all your posts.

Howdy from Ohio...good to have you in the house! You'll want to ask your question in the revolver section of the form (present day one). You'll get better traffic and better insight and answers. You might also want to edit out the last few numbers of the serial number. Not a great idea to put the whole number on any gun website. Good luck!

Thanks guys. I should add that I've never felt a tighter smoother more precise trigger, even after 1911 trigger jobs.

Welcome from Philadelphia. I agree with you, the 686 is an impressive weapon. Good luck with it!
