I am a HUGE 1911 fan, but Smith and Wesson has some Spectacular SAO Auto-Loaders
There is nothing finer than a model 52
I have been shooting this one for decades now. It has a Bomar rib added with the extended front sight. It will give you one ragged hole all day long.
I have one in stock configuration as well
There was the 745, but it was hardly more than a SAO version of the 645. There was no special fitting or attempt to make it into a fine target pistol in the tradition of the model 52
The 745 was a good shooting gun, It even became the IPSC 10th anniversary firearm.
Then Lew Horton convinced Smith and Wesson to produce the 845. Smith and Wesson designed the firearm in the 1980s, but the pistol was not produced until 10 years later.
The 845 is probably the true successor to the model 52, at least performance wise. It shoots just as good as long as you do your part
There were two variations of 845. Mine (the model of 1998) has the forward cocking serrations, my Uncle's (the Limited)does not
The 952 is a beautiful firearm as you can see in 625smith's post. It has lines very similar to the older model 52. 625smith's is the longer 6" version, it was also made in a 5" configuration in either blue or stainless
It is hard not to talk about the beautiful 3566 Limited. This was a great looking pistol designed for a new and potent cartridge, the 356TSW. It was designed around a 5" all steel platform
This was another spectacular offering from the Performance Center. The new cartridge could have dominated several of the shooting sports if new rules and a lack of multiple sources of factory ammunition had not taken the firearm off the playing field just as it was getting started.
Smith and Wesson did make one 3566 Limited with a second top end that was built around the 40S&W cartridge (also new to the market). I guess that they were considering a 4066?
There were others as well.
The PPC-9 was very similar in configuration to the 3566 Limited pictured above. It was all stainless instead of the two tone look that the 3566 family had and the PPC-9 was offered in both 5" and 6" variations. Sorry, I do not have either one to provide photographs of.
There are more that are just not coming to mind at the moment
