Skunk in a Live Trap -- Help!

Several decades ago, I was checking a construction site due to a complaint of prowlers. It was night and I entered a room where I heard a noise by the available light and waited. When I heard a sound of movement, I turned on my flashlight. No prowlers. But in the reflected light, I saw a large economy size skunk by my left leg, who'd been going through a discarded lunch bag. I also noted that I was standing on the hair of his tail.

I turned off the light and waited until I heard him going through the lunch bag again and, without moving my left foot, moved my right foot to the corner of the doorway. After gathering my courage and making sure his attention was still on food, I lifted my left foot and exited, stage right, rapidly.

We've got them wandering around our location frequently, they seem rather placid critters. I recall meeting one by our maintenance shop, and being polite, opened the door for it. It looked into the shop and at me a couple of times and then walked a large circle around me and went about his business.

Late one night - Very late one night - I cleverly ran out of gas on TN-100 (a beautiful 2 lane highway, btw). So I rolled to the side of the road and put my right foot down. Unfortunately I was not only on the edge of the road I was also on the edge of a ditch! So I'm all alone holding a dresser Harley up with my left leg still over the bike. I was stuck!
I stood there for quite a while and whenever a car would go buy (not very frequently) I'd turn on the flashers and wave - They just kept going....
In a bit I pretty much decided to drop the bike and hope to get out of its way when I heard a weird noise. When the next car came by and I could see I looked down and there was a momma skunk and her 3 little ones walking along between my leg and the bike.
They do not move very fast and when the THP officer finally showed up and stood the bike up they were about 50 yards away and I was still standing there being very quiet.

BTW - The skunks never squirted, and they walked along in a very straight line. Momma first and the 3 little ones close behind - Kinda cute :)

Could have been worse - Could have been a pack of dogs that some nice folks just turn loose out in the country when they're tired of them. I guess they figure that coyotes have to eat too :(

Had a local PD get called to a residence where the owner had live trapped a skunk. No firearms discharge within city limits or the R/O didn't want to get his gun dirty. They poured gasoline over the trap and set it on fire. The skunk broke out of the trap and ran under the garage. Game Protecter wrote them both for Cruelty to Animal Citations. The Garage didn't fair so well either.

Although I was in the Army, I served for a while at several Air Force radar squadrons. I remember an exercise held at the Fort Fisher Radar Squadron in NC; the radar cables ran in concrete troughs from the radar tower into the darkened operations room. The controllers had scopes in front of them, joysticks in both hands and a foot switch to transmit to the fighter aircraft. Some of the metal coverings of the troughs were out of place; a skunk went down into one and came up in the darkened operations room. A controller, thinking he was transmitting to his aircraft, stepped briskly on the skunk's tail instead. We called 'fade out" (exercise finished) shortly thereafter.

There were plenty of snakes in the area, and thus plenty of skunks. Once, some of the KPs noticed a skunk run under the mess hall. One intellectual giant poked it with the end of a broom stick; we ate somewhere else for a week or so.

We have been bothered lately by raccoons raiding our bird feeders. Since we live inside city limits, shooting them is not a good option. Enter the idea of a live trap. Then, one night, before installing the live trap, my dog gets hit by a skulking skunk right by the bird feeders. Now the idea of a live trap for the Coons seems a bit more risky. What the heck to do if I catch a Skunk??? How do you get one of those critters out of a live trap without getting nailed??

By the way, when my dog got hit, the Peroxide, baking soda and soap bath worked wonders, but I don't want to have to endure that myself - it's getting too durn cold for outdoor baths!

Any suggestions???

Subsonic .22 rounds from a rifle. Problem solved.

I've had dozens in a live trap over the years. I decided to "gas" one. Made a custom hose fitting that went from the exhaust pipe of my old Chev pickup into the side of a cardboard box that covered the skunk-filled live trap.

Started the truck

Lifted the box after 15 minutes. Skunk is slightly smiling.

Checked after 30 minutes. Skunk is smirking (they do this).

Shut off the truck. Shot skunk. Skunk sprays (they ALWAYS do this).

I get dead Skunk out of trap. Puke. Drag Skunk into field and bury.

Reset trap. What fun!
