I have a 908 and a 6904 that I would like to refinish/touchup the slides on. The finish on both of them look different to me. The 908 has a more thin blueing with some speckling and the 6904 has what appears to be a much deeper blueing and looks more like a melonite finish, but I don't think it is. The 6904 has holster wear near the muzzle.

The 908 appears to be blued steel, but is the 6904 blued steel also or some type of blackened stainless?

I don't care for cerakote and would really like to touch up the finishes in such a way that it wouldn't void the warranties.

I called the mothership a few months back hoping I could get them to Armornite/Melonite coat the 908 slide, they said they would only refinish it back to the original factory finish.

If I were to have a 3rd party company melonite the slides, do you think it would void the warranty?

Should I just break out the birchwood casey gun blue and touch them up?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

6904 touch-up

I recently purchased a 6904 with minor holster wear, not a purist, cleaned wear area with mineral spirits and followed up with a medium sharpie marker. Worked for me, whether it holds, time will tell

Minor touch up to a flat blued or black oxided finish can be done with one of Caswell Plating's black oxide products.

I've had great results getting stuff nitrided by H&M Metal processing. As I recall it was $100 to run a slide through the Isonite QPQ treatment process. But that was a while back.

BTW... Isonite, melonite, tenifer, nitride, et. al. Are all basically the same and not a coating but a form or case hardening. The black finish is merely a side effect. It's not something that is applied but is a result of the part being submerged in a bath of molten cyanide salts though which nitrogen is bubbled. Even on old treated parts where the black color has worn off a bit the case hardened layer of the steel surface remains

Cheers
