Slide issue?

New to the site. Purchased a 9mm M&P Shield and shot 300 rounds thru it and no problem at all. I field stripped and cleand and lubricated the spots the manual called for. After reassembly I noticed that if the safety was off and I racked the slide everything worked perfectly. But if the safety was on and I racked the slide, the slide would stop about 3/16" before being in the home position. If I pushed it maually it would go to the home position. Not sure if this is normal or if I have messed something up reassembling or didnt get it cleaned enough? Any help would be appreciated.

Did you ride the slide as it slid home or just pull it all the way back and let it go? On a new Shield if you let the slide go back slowly they can stop before going into battery. Just let if fly and its fine. Never ride the slide.

Was this with or without a full mag inserted?

Never rode the slide. Just got off the phone with S&W and the tech guy said that it was normal.

Hmm, that doesn't sound normal to me. The safety has nothing to do with the slide, so should not matter if engaged or not. I don't have this issue with mine. However, my slide would occasionally not fully rack closed when it was newer. Not a problem now with lots of use.
