There is a "thing" somewhat resembling a small part of a paper clip, sometimes painter yellow, just under the bolt face when bolt locked back. This "thing" must be pressed down with a ball point tip or similar. Then the slide travels forward and off when the slide stop is released. The thing then must be raised again in re assembly. An EMPTY magazine inserted will do this.

If you put the sear deactivation lever down too far it reengages and won't release. Make sure the takedown lever is down, and pull the trigger like a Glock. Should come off

The thing is the "sear deactivation lever" according to the parts list.
He other way to remove a S&W M&P full size of shield slide is to "glock it". With the gun empty and mag removed turn the tack down lever and move the slide into battery then pull and hold the trigge, the slide should then come forward and be removed. S&W doesn't any to do this but people who never read the manuals do it all the time.

The Sigmas were just like the Glock, had to dry fire to get slide off. The M&P series came with the little dingy so it disengages the sear so you don't have to dry fire it for those that can't handle the stress.
