This is more cosmetic then anything but I thought I'd ask if anyone has run into this:

I've just shoved my one spare mag in my pocket the last couple of days and tonight I happened to notice it was a bit rusty?
I'd figgered the mags were at best stainless and at the least some kind of coated steel, but it looks like they're just blued so they can get rust if you get them wet/sweaty.

Just an FYI.

That's just plain BS they should have done it better than that. imho

Guess they got it figured out. I wondered why many illustrations show blued magazines.

Two came with my pistol and I orderd two more from Police Supply. All the same. Still waiting for my two "free" ones.

I,too,am awaiting my two free mags my .45 is the FDE one and it came with these two black mags,my thought was they were ether coated stainless or coated sheet steel-looks like blued sheet steel...not so "high-tech"

But now that I'm aware of it I'll just get them finished in something somedays, hell maybe hard chrome or NP3.

Mine are the ones like yours. Pistol was made in late 2007. Bought it new in the box from a dealer last month. If my mags start rusting. I can assure you I will see to it that S&W sends me two new ones.

Buy half a dozen mag tubes and send them out to RoBar to have NP3 applied.

The 45 mags have changed to a new finish that is more rust resistant than the older blued mags. I have had some minor rusting on the older mags that were carried as spares next to the body but have had no rust with the newer ones. I`m not too concerned about it to be honest, they still work great and it has not progressed after cleaning the mags and spraying on some Liquid Wrench dry lube.

My early 2008 production M&P 45 came with blued carbon steel mags.

I was told S&W received some complaints from a LE agency about rusting on their blue steel M&P 45 mags. Perhaps not everyone remembers when blued carbon steel was how all mags came, and took simple steps to maintain & preserve them. Dunno.

Anyway, I was told S&W was looking to have a vendor apply a Teflon-based finish to the carbon steel mags to make them more rust-resistant.

When I ordered some extra mags a while later they came with the new finish.

Neither my blued nor new finish mag bodies have rusted, but then I wipe them down and clean them periodically.

I haven't asked what finish is being used on the new 9/40 mags (made by Mec-Gar, BTW), but the mags used in my M&P 40c have been exposed to heavy rain and moisture during various range sessions over the last year. One day I had to pour water out of them as I was loading them between drills (and I was loading them using rounds being carried in an outside jacket pocket that was partly filled with rain water). One of those nasty range days.

I disassembled them and wiped them dry at the end of the day, followed by cleaning them with patches lightly moistened with CLP and then using clean/dry patches to wipe off the CLP residue before reassembling the mags. No rust has appeared. Whatever finish they're using on the black mags, it seems to withstand normal use decently enough (presuming a bit of reasonable care).

Perspiration can vary from one person to the next. I used to know a guy whose sweat was so toxic that he could handle a blue steel revolver in the evening, and by the next morning the finish was mottled brown (and that was with clean hands that weren't particularly sweaty).

Fastbolt I may be one of those guys whose sweat is akin to salt water,I remember having an ATS 34 pocket knife and just one humid afternoon in my pocket would cause brown spots to show up.

I rather prefer ether stainless or teflon coating so all I have to do is keep them dry and reasonably clean.
Once I get my free mags I'm going to snag a few more and when I have enough I'll get these coated.

I too keep an extra mag in the pocket, but I have taken a Pro Style 4 inch wrist band, stitched up one end and put the mag in it. It fits, keeps it from scraping on what ever else is in the pocket, keeps the round in the mag, and will keep the mag dry and sweat free, is very quick and east to remove.

Aside from rust, magazines in pockets remove all pocket lint. This isn't beneficial to feed reliability. With all the various widgets everyone is hanging on the belts these days, a magazine pouch isn't going to be either noticed or talked about. Unless you're at an airport.
