You may have added a flat screen, smart TV to your home for the holidays. That they have a wonderful picture and are so much easier to design into your furnishings is not in doubt, particularly if you elect to use a wall bracket and hang your new "smart TV."

Well, my son and his fiancee visited for the holidays and he brought along a flash drive with lots of good viewing on it. Now, remember I mentioned dumb designers? The ports for the flash drives are behind the TV. Unless you have thin arms and are trained in Braille, you'll have to dismount the TV to plug in the flash drive.

There is a solution you should be familiar with: before you hang the TV, buy a port extension and simply plug it in to the TV's port. While you're at it, you'll also need an optical cable if you want audio contained on a flash drive to play through your surround system. This too may require dismounting the TV unless you thought to do it first.

I'm not nearly qualified enough to join the Geek Squad but I thought I'd save my cyber friends some aggravation as they attempt to get their new TVs up and running.

Be careful weight loading ports that are oriented to the sides. The ports are often poorly supported and can snap off the circuit board. Supporting the wire with stick-on heavy-duty velcro helps relieve the strain.

Design engineers are some of the stupidest people on the planet.

It's like they only get one-half of a good idea at a time, and they never get both halves of a good idea, ever.

:D

(Any engineers that are smith-wesson forum members are excluded, obviously. ;) :D)
