Welcome Gabriele.

Here is the front sight on my S&W Model 17-3.

I am not seeing any difference between the two other than the red ramp on mine.

Yours appears to be pretty normal to me.

My gun shipped in 1975.

Enjoy,

But on 17 model is not by default partridge sight as in photo?

Your Model 17-3 and my Model 17-3 were special ordered with that 'ramp' or 'Baughman' front sight.

Yes, the typical front sight on the six inch barreled Model 17's would have been the Patridge front sight.

Your sight and mine are typical for the four inch barreled Model 18 and it's predecessor, the K22 Combat Masterpiece.

Smith and Wesson would offer the buyer options on the front sights.

Yours is an option as is mine.

Just for the fun of it:

The bottom line is the buyer had his choice of any of the target fronts made by or available to S&W------typically at no extra charge. The bad news is a selection other than the standard sight sometimes/frequently/often occasioned special order treatment------and a wait of up to 6 months. Relatively few customers were inclined to wait for their favorite sight----took what came as standard fare, and swapped them out later.

My first store bought brand new gun was a similar situation---a K-22 with the funky finish (Satin Blue). I wanted the Bright Blue. No problem----we'll have it for you in six months. My solution was to take the gun with the funky finish, ship it off to Springfield, where it was treated to a Bright Blue refinsh, and returned to me in 2-3 weeks.

The difference between getting unto the production schedule and getting into the service department.
