Smith 58 altered. Value questions?

I once saw a frame that was stamped 28-2. The barrel was stamped .44 Magnum and the cylinder was chambered in .44 Magnum as well.

I think that 58 is just a mis-marked frame.

In the late 1960 and 1970 era it was common practice in my part of the world to convert Model 28s to .44 Magnum by changing the barrel and cylinder. I had several done.

Yes, you can put an adjustable sight on a fixed sight topstrap.
The tough part is blending the topstrap with the rib of a barrel meant for adjustables.

Well it's on hold for me until I pay for it. I did look again and I can tell it's a 58 with the work done, but done very well. The 44 mag barrel sits ever so slightly higher than the rounded front of the 58 frame. Nice wooden smooth targets with pretty grain. Presentation box (inner needs relining, and a sweet trigger, smooth and crisp. Cylinder opens and closes like glass. Just a smooth gun from what I see. The presentation box and the nice grips are a $200.00 value.
May be a month or so but I'll post pics when I get it and have time.

It sure is east to find help here rationalizing a purchase. Oops! I mean it's lucky you realized the family desperately needed another in time to save the day. ;)

Watching the grand kids shoot it will be worth $700. :)

I would likely steer clear of it.

You said it! Is this what I've seen referred to as a "Frankengun?" Is it even safe to shoot? Why is it being sold? A gun as heavily modified as this could be someone else's mistake. And what is the point of doing this if 29s are available commercially, unlike during the Dirty Harry craze of the early 70s?

I would save my $ and wait for either a new or unmodified gun.
