Smith 629 No Dash

I would like to get a born date on a 629 No Dash 4 Inch. SN:N85569X

The serial number corresponds to 1980-1983

I have N866129 which shipped in September of 1981. Those 4 inch first year guns are fun to find. I'm guessing yours is 1981 as well but it will take a letter to know for sure. Unless you join the SWCA which I highly recommend and then the good Dr. Jinks will give you a ship date just for the asking. Oh, and here's mine which turned up in a small LGS in the Texas Panhandle last fall; probably the best part of that particular whitetail hunt.

The 629 was introduced in 1979 but in 6 inch. So, "first run" in terms of first year for the 4 inch P&R (and 8 3/8); only year really as S&W stopped P&R not long after the the 4 inch 629s were introduced. The 629-1 (stop P&R and slight change to cylinder length) started in 1982. Some "transition" guns (may be pinned not recessed or vice versa) were made during the transition to the -1. Again, you need a letter to confirm the exact date but most likely yours was shipped in 1981.

The 4 inch 629 no dash is in demand I suppose because there are relatively few of them. Not that they are rare by any means but not easy to find either. Pictures of yours? Enjoy.
