Smith 645 and 4506

They look like interesting guns, for .45 lovers (like me).

Any issues with these, and what are the going prices?

Both are indeed awesome handguns that make you feel like you're wielding some serious power. My 4506-1 has been uber reliable, is as accurate as any .45acp I have ever fired and is one of the guns in my collection that I will never part with (hell or high water). Prices vary wildly by location and availability (police trades, used guns, etc.), but I have seen a few recently for around $450-500. 645's run about the same. Of course you will pay more, maybe a lot more, for NIB or LNIB since they are out of production.

Try to find a 4505 which is a carbon steel 4506 made in limited numbers, 1500 I believe, for the US Submarine Service. I love mine and like MLK18 wouldn't part with it. I'm surprised they are listed as having the same value as the 4506. I probably overpaid but I couldn't let it go - like my Colt Series 80 lwt commander.

4505 was not made for the "US Submarine Service". It was merely a carbon steel version of the 4506. One was up for auction last week on GB. Sold at $999.99 if I remember correctly. There was also one for sale in the Classifieds on this board, don't remember what it was selling for though.

The 4506 is a marvelous pistol.....built like a tank and extremely reliable. Price fluctuates between $400-600.......sometimes hirer sometimes lower. How much is it worth or how much should I pay is a hard question to answer....every collector/shooter has a different threshold as far as what they can afford. If you find one and like it, it is only too expensive if you can't afford it.

Just picked up a 4506-1 last week. Not a blemish on the outside. Some light wear marks around the barrel lug. I ordered recoil and magazine springs from S&W. Hope to get to the range once those are replaced. The pistol was shipped 11/1990. It came with no papers or box, but did come with two magazines. $500 out the door.

4506 and 645

I have owned both and liked them both. Both were sold to good friends.

I now own 3 1911 style pistols. All are excellent. I now have a HK USP
45 ACP.

Even so, I would purchase a 645. Same magazines for 645 and 4506.

I agree with everything that has already been said about the 4506 and will add that It's a tank of a gun that performs flawlessly,is very accurate and properly maintained, will last you a life time. I my area prices range from $400-$500. I picked up mine this past summer for $425 w/one extra Mag.

i carried a 4506-1 for 10+ years....built like a M1A1 tank, heavy as Hell, but a very fine gun..and i paid $1.00 for mine when we switched to the JUNKLOCK..and now we can carry the M&P..so happy now i go to go back to a smith(real American 1/2 steel gun)...lol

I prefer the 645. I love the polished ss frame and slide. I also shoot this better than all of the 4506's that have passed through my hands. Honestly, you won't go wrong with either.

Speaking of the 4505, there's one on GB right now. I seem to recall a PD or SO in Louisiana issuing the 4505 but don't remember the details now.

My (2) Model 645's

My (2) 645's. I like/perfer the solid grip frame opposed to the open back incorporating the grips as the main spring cover on the 3RD generation 4505&4506's.
First is a 645 estate gun I bought last year with (7) different slides (various sight configurations).
The second is a completely reshaped blacken stainless finish custom 645 with a special modified 4516 slide fitted to it.

Love mine,4506-1,seems to eat anything (all I've had through it is cheap FMJ and some bargain Win JHP) big but carries nice,best of all it fits me well as whenever I pick it up it comes to aim with the sights lined up.

Had it not even a year but has become a favorite,I'd have no problem just using it as my one and only carry.

I really like the 645. Prices range from low $400's to about $600 nib.
Has to be the absolutely best "peace of mind" pistol I ever owned when it comes tro reliability....durability....and safety. Its no lightweight but carries just fine with a good holster and; more importantly, absolute top-of-the-line leather gun belt.

My father gave me his 645 that he bought when it was new (he is retired LEO) and he never fired it and I have out several hundred rounds through it and I'm very impressed. Very little recoil, easy to handle, heavy but sturdy and very, very accurate!!

I love 645/4506's, I had a 645 that I let go in a moment of weakness. But I now have 2 4506's to make up for it, they are way overbuilt, extremely reliable and very accurate 45's. My favorite 45 pistols bar none!
