You do not say where you are, but Collector's Firearms in Houston has them regularly.

The 686-4 Plus is uncommon and usually brings more than the standard version, but they are available. The visual clue to them is the cylinder notch lining up with the flute.

The 4” seems to be the most common (at least on gun broker). 2.5” and 6” are more rare but out there.

Now that you mention it, I dont think Ive ever seen a 2.5” Dash four in the wild, here, gun broker...no where.

I was not looking for one but did come across one at my LGS. within the past year. 686-4, 4" barrel. Bought it, shot a couple hundred rounds thru it, and sold it. They are out there.

They are not hard to find.

Based on your limited activity on this site since 2013, I'd say your biggest issue is lack of diligence. No offense intended.

I run across quite a few hard to find in "private sale" on armslist now and then. I buy a lot for cash in AZ.

If you go to my office and look in my middle left hand desk drawer you will find one in it's natural habitat-it wears magnas, a tyler and both are wrapped with purple vet tape to give just the right amount of tackiness to the grip. Old school and it is the best feeling grip for this gun. The narcotics guys go ape-**** when I bring it to the range :D

On the ten scale, with ten being one in every Wal-Mart and sporting goods store in America (e.g. 10/22) and one being the factory made exactly one of them in 1946 as a salesman's sample, the 686+ -4 revision 4" is about a five or six. Meaning they are uncommon but come up for sale often enough that, with some effort, you should be able to get one. That's how I got mine (a 6" though). Armslist, local gun boards/forums, Gunbroker, checking shops regularly, etc.

They are NOT that easy to find. I think previous posters are quoting new 686's with the lock (which I care not at all for!) Is it a round butt or square butt? I have a 586-4 4" round butt that is fairly scarce.

Well not to make you wanna vomit in your mouth but I had no idea how rare they were and this last December I held one in my hand at a gun show for $550 but didn’t know what I had. Set it down and someone picked it up 2 minutes later and bought it.

Ok, have to ask. If you wanted it so badly, and were so happy to get it, why is it now for sale on the "for sale" side?
