A friend has everything but the frame. Has a "V" shaped mainspring. Is this something that S and W used prior to the now standard spring? Has a barrel, but only marked with the caliber. Photos not yet available. Please help if you can. Thanks

You could have parts for a 38 S&W I Frame which has a 5 shot cylinder or a K Frame, 6 shot cylinder. But to my knowledge neither ever used a V spring, so that’s not the correct spring.

S&W only experimented with a V spring on some N frames about the middle of the 1950s for a short period of time.

Well, lacking A BUNCH of needed information which you'll find up above----perhaps under the heading of how to identify your gun-----or your friend's gun, I can offer this: There was a time when, in addition to the regular leaf spring, there was also a U spring----and a W spring---serving duty as the hammer spring AND the trigger rebound spring. I don't recall if these came on a gun as standard equipment, but they could be had from the S&W Parts folks----------and any number of retailers. My next recall is these were for N frames------and I don't recall (if I ever knew) if there's any difference between the mainspring for an N frame and a K frame or not-------seems like there should be----but!
