Smith and Wesson Model 14

If it is a factory 5 inch barreled Model 14, then it is quite rare. A lot of 5 and 4 inch Model 14's started as 6 inch Model 14's and then the barrel was cut back to 4 or 5 inches or the barrel replaced with a Model 15 barrel. Also, some people do not know how to correctly measure the barrel and take the measurement from the muzzle to front edge of the frame, this measurement is about 1 inch less than the true barrel length, so a 5 inch Model 14 turns out to be a common 6 inch Model 14.

Can anyone tell me about a model 14 with a 5 inch barrel? Especially value!!

If it is a factory 5 inch barreled Model 14, then it is quite rare . . .

There were special-order runs of 5" barrels but we would need a serial number to determine if it was among the known runs.

Other information that would help us identify what you have are:
1) is it model-marked (14, 14-1 or 14-2)
2) if it is not model-marked, does it have a tapered, narrow-rib barrel or a heavy rib

If you're able to post pictures it would help us answer your value question.

I have this "K-38 Heavy Masterpiece" that was part of a special order by the Illinois State Police in 1957. Unique and highly functional in every respect. Relative to the value, I know what I paid but I'll let the experts offer their opinion. :)

The 5" barrel on the Model 14 gets really interesting sometimes. I picked up a 14-2 with a 5" and the history letter said it was open on the books and there are no shipping records. Fortunately for me, Bill Cross (thanks again) managed to find the invoice for it and sent it to me.

I have a Model 14-2 with a 5" barrel that was one of a group of 24 identical guns special ordered with that barrel length and shipped to American Wholesale Hardware Co. in Long Beach CA in January 1964.
We need more information and pictures to determine value but if a true factory 5" Model 14 they are sought after guns and a high condition example with original box could easily sell for $1000 these days.
