Smith and Wesson model 1917

I was visiting a gundealer and a other customer give me a Smith and Wesson revolver wich was on the counter. He asked me: "Is this something for you?". He knew that i do collect revolvers. I saw a very modest blue N frame revolver with a very ugly rubbergrip on it. But I did saw the caliber. That is .45 acp. I tought: Could it be??". When i did removed the ugly grip the bottemstrap tells me that it was indeed a US model 1917. I do not have to tell you that I bought it instantly. OK, there are some things missing. I do miss the original grip and the lanyard ring. That problem will be solved in time. I did put a small K frame grip for a Victory on it. Yes I know it is to small. But way better than the ugly rubbergrip. And YES. The revolver is realy something for me.

I'm sure some more knowledgeable people will be along shortly and tell you all about it, and maybe help you find grips and a lanyard ring.

Accepted by the Army in January 1919.

The stud and ring are not hard to find. The original stud and ring would be case hardened, not blued. Original stocks are a bit expensive but copies are available.

The Model 1917 was the first of a long line of 45 ACP revolvers offered by S&W. Some think this is the pinnacle of the company’s products. I have several and enjoy them.

Pretty sure it would have been produced with smooth grips. Others more knowledgeable can advise if I'm not correct.

Seems I have seen them before but can't recall.
