Smith and Wesson Number 2

I have a Smith and Wesson #2 revolver. I would like to have the gun mechanically restored. The hinge at the barrel and the frame is loose. The gun cocks and the trigger drops the hammer, but the cylinder does not index. I don't want the gun refinished. Can anyone suggest someone who can do the work?

Since these guns are rarely shot today, the hinge is an easy fix if one can remove the screw. The "ears" on the frame can be slightly pressed together with the screw and barrel removed until the barrel is a tight fit and it will last and shoot for years without loosening. My method back when I was collecting and shooting Model 2s was to use a vice with hardwood jaws and place the ears just inside one end. Compress them slightly and test the barrel for fit until it becomes harder to install the barrel. That will take care of hinge issues. If the screw refuses to loosen, you must make the decision as to whether to drill it out and find a replacement screw that can be used to replace the original hinge screw.

As for the hand issue, there are few parts out there to replace broken or worn parts. Jack First has made some parts for Model 2s in the past, but do not know what he has today. There are literally no gunsmiths anywhere that will take on a project of repairing 150 year old revolvers, so unless you ae able and willing to take on such a project, you are better off selling what you have and paying the extra to find a decent operating gun for your collection.

Photos?

Jeff,
Can You post photos? So many of these have had the hinges welded, cut, drilled out, pinned, wrong screw, etc. Easier to evaluate with photos.

I am absolutely sure that the hinge and screw have been incorrectly modified. I know I would be money ahead if I just bought one in working order. I just don't want this ending up in junk box. I am going to reach
out to Matthew Sinberg a gunsmith recommended by Terry.
