Smith now has the Shields on their website in .30SC.
Curious if anyone has bought one yet, and has a range report?
Apologies if someone has already dropped a thread on this, didn't see it.

Actually held one at the local gun shop last week. $520+out the door. Not impressed would be an understatement. Didn't shoot it of course. Really not impressed with the cost of the ammo. $1.20/round for practice and $2.15/round for carry.

Casual shooter, someone who fired a hundred rounds a year maybe. Someone who shoots a lot no! For 2 extra rounds in a mag? Heck no!

"No one puts new wine into old wine skins", LOL. A lot of us are heavily invested in 9mm so don't expect much interest to show here. Somebody who's not invested so much in 9, should take shoot a 30 and decide.

yes, cost of rounds would have to halve, and field tests from the reputable would have to be outstanding to even consider. Just found it interesting that Smith dove in.

I'm not averse to the cartridge itself but I am already heavily invested in 9mm, 380, and 40. The SC is not different enough to fill a niche for me at this time. If I ever gave up my gen1 9mm Shield it would be for a P365, not another Shield. And I have learned my lesson about beta testing for S&W. I'm not buying anything they make until after the first major revision. I got lucky on my Shield (many people did not) but I have been burned on other models.

I examined a pair of EZs in .30SC about 2 weeks ago. One had a very heavy, gritty trigger; the other had a lighter, grittier trigger. Neither were what I'd recommend for someone with limited hand strength, which I understand to be the target market for the EZ.

The shop had already sold the only standard .30 Shield they received, so I can't comment on that. They had one 20 round box of ammo for $32.95.

The .30SC is a marketing gimmick, seems someone figured they needed to develop something "new" to sell. Kind of like the .45 GAP, it sounded nice but I'd be surprised if it sticks to the wall.

An 8 shot stainless revolver on the style of the 986 would be more interesting and $20 for box of 50 range ammo to go along with it.
What model number would it be if made?

For 2 extra rounds in a mag?

In the 60s one of my mentors carried a .45 ACP Colt. He said if you carried a 9 m/m High Power you needed those extra bullets. My thinking is that if you carry a 30SC instead of a 9 m/m you will need the extra bullets. Larry

From the initial tests I've seen on the interwebs, it doesn't match up to the 9mm performance wise. Maybe later, when there's a better variety of ammo, that could change. For now, two extra rounds isn't a game changer for me. YMMV.

My common sense and experience has led me to believe that a light, small dia. bullet cannot do what a heavier and larger dia. bullet will do. The .327 federal Magnum will never equal the .357M and the .357M will never equal the .44M. The .30SC will never be able to do what a 9 m/m can do.
My opinion is that the the 30SC is not an improvement over any current cartridges and is just a gimmick for gun and ammo companies to sell their new, fantastic, improved and recently discovered gimmick. Larry

I own a Shield EZ in 30SC. I have shot 115gr gold dots in ballistics gel comparing to 115gr 9mm Gold Dots. The performance between the two were near identical, there are some ammo tests on YT that back that up. I haven't shot 100gr ammo yet (can't find any in stock) but what I can say is shooting both 9mm and 30SC back to back is that 30SC does recoil slightly less than 9mm but unless you're shooting back to back you wouldn't notice. the 2 extra round in a mag are nice, but at this point I would recommend staying with the Shield EZ in 9mm, at least until more 30SC is readily available at a normal price.
