I have a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum Model 27-2. It is a 5 1/2" barrel. I know that it is not very common. There hasn't been very many rounds ever put through it. It is a blue finish. Just checking to see what peoples thoughts are on this gun. It was my father's, he has never shot it. I have never shot it, but it was bought used.

It is a 5 1/2" barrel. My mother bought it for my father from a Police officer. It is a collectors item, because of the barrel size.

Welcome to the FORUM! Only my opinion, but I think that it is time for the 27 to go to the range for a workout! Some years ago, I looked for 1 for myself for quite a while. Never happened. Did end up with a 28 though. (6" no dash from 1960) Econo version 27. Definitely a keeper, and my 1st G.B. purchase. Enjoy your 27! Bob

No matter what the barrel length, you have a very nice handgun. Indeed, if it belonged to your father, it's a family heirloom.

The 5" S&W Mod. 27 is my favorite handgun. As has been mentioned it is, as are all its various barrel lengths, the "Premier" offering from S&W during its era. It was the only handgun, to my knowledge, offered with checkering on the top strap and barrel.

That it's so sought after by so many people is a tribute to its esthetics, near perfect balance and shooting/carry practicality. I don't believe I've ever talked to anyone who owns a 5" that doesn't consider it among their favorites if not their all-time favorite handgun.

Many of us regret the 5" barrel was never offered for the Mod. 57, the Mod. 25 or the Mod. 29 in normal production runs. I believe they would all be among the most sought after N frame barrel lengths today.

Congratulations on owning a very fine revolver! I'll lend you a picture of one of mine until you can post your own…..

Favorite Barrel Length

Skeeter Skelton was quite enamored of the 5" barrel M-27.

Enamored to say the least. While I can't verify this, I'm guessing he penned more stories about his Model 27 five inch than any other revolver, other than perhaps his other love, the Ruger Flattop 44. I was equally enamored and back in the mid-70's, found a new in mahogany box 5 inch 3'T's at Montgomery Wards in San Diego and took it home with me, same day back then. Mine is a 27-2 where Skeeter's I recall was a 5 screw. Still have it. As for the Flattop, it took me another decade to find a 95% gem at a gun show in Los Angeles (yes, they had them then) and snatched it up as well. My problem was/is if Skeeter or Elmer liked it, it was good enough for me!. Ultimately acquired an obscene, but average here, collection of 27's and more 29's. Nearly every barrel length, but 5 inch N frames are amazing. Congrats to you. I expect you will enjoy it more as each day passes.

Here are a couple of pictures.
I am glad I was able to hear some history on this gun. At one time I had considered selling it. I think I will keep it now, after talking to all of you. Thank You.
