Smith & Wesson Model 29-1 Buyer Beware

If you zoom in on the trigger guard on the picture with it in the box you can see part of the electro marking on trigger guard. But, buyer should not have to go to that length

Ya, it would buff out, right along with every bit of blue on the bottom of trigger guard.

People who use those electro engravers on the exterior surfaces of guns need to have a number tattooed on their forehead

Yeah, [IDIOT] with the electro engraver.

Well, it sucks. But that is a damned nice revolver...The marker might remove with rubbing alcohol. I have had success with that. And the label might come off too. The clamshell is a bummer. Don't try to remove the electro pencil, it will not go well...Obviously, the seller didn't give a care to doing things the right way. Their feedback is a big red flag. Ask for a return/refund, and chalk it up as a hard lesson if they deny. I do like the gun.

22highpower I have read on the forum that the 29-1 list is 72 guns long but I don't have access to it.

LittleAugieMo I think you might be on to something as one of the pieces of masking tape had the same 545 number on it.

stanmerrell the fact that the pictures show almost no finish wear was what attracted me to the revolver in the first place. With the presentation box and tools included it looked like a great package. You can imagine how sick I was to my stomach when I saw the number electropenciled on the trigger guard.

How does "All Sales are Final" on the GB advert line up with them providing an e-mail address for "Returns/Exchanges"?

The seller took a few close up shots of those grips and P&R and should be held to the same standard re trigger guard etching.

This may be a poor fix for a gun with high polish bluing, but I've used black helicopter tape on guns with scratches, marks in out of the way places. Works great on a finish such as found on the Ruger Blackhawk frame.

FWIW I paid nearly twice as much for a 29-1 last month. Amoskeag rated the metal condition at 98%. Mine did not come with "Coke" grips, but did include a letter and presentation case in good condition. I was one step away from my limit on the bidding and may have "paid too much" but it's mine now.

I would be beyond aggravated with that seller!

In the future, go to feedback. Click on the "Rating" column to sort worst-to-best. I wouldn't risk buying a box of Kleenex from that outfit.

I agree with RT44nut.
This seller has 30 negative feedbacks in 12 months! I've never seen that much negative feedback on a seller in the 23 years I've been registered on Gunbroker.
I don't care how bad I might want a
gun, seeing that, I'd never buy anything from that hump.

Sorry you got burned- 2 things, #1 I'd stay away from any seller with that many neg feedbacks as others here have stated and for a gun like that, I'd ask for several more pics before getting into that auction.

I thought the same thing. Although, when I had to mark revolvers for evidence, I pulled a grip panel and did it under there. Initials and date were required for my department, but not every place is the same.

Our Dept. used to mark a gun for evidentiary purposes and I hated that. When I was made the evidence officer, I told everyone not to mark a gun, as the SN would suffice for that purpose. It saved a lot of nice guns from being ruined.

Case

From the pics provide by handejector's link, my opinion is the case interior is typical of a clamshell case that had a gun stored in it. A cham shell ALWAYS has gouges at the rear sight, front sight, and possibly in the cylinder recess. The exterior is different situation! Removing the tape will leave visual evidence of the tape and the sticker will probably leave remnants of the glue.
The only salvation for that case exterior is to sand and refinish the case.
I have done many, jcelect

unless I overlooked it, I never did see any picture showing the actual model stamp on the gun.is it really a 29-1 ?

Well....you may be able to have an engraver hide/cover-up the "electro pencil" work but that would open up another can of worms

^^This. Yes, the electro pencil sucks; but that's the lowest price I've seen in a LONG time on a 29-1. Nothing wrong with the inside of the case. They all have some wear to the flocking. Don't refinish the inside. It's original. Try to clean up the outside and contact jcelect if you can't live with it.
