Smith & Wesson Model 60

I have purchased a Smith & Wesson model 60, no dash, Serial #R1572XX. Do not believe it has the original hammer. Any info as to manufacture date and value would be appreciated. I have attached two photos in PDF format (only way I can load a photo).

Hi Danny:

What happened to that little Model 60? I've never seen that type of "treatment" to the hammer on any S&W revolver I've ever encountered. It looks like someone decided the regular cross-hatching done on the hammer spur wasn't good enough, and then took some kind of tool (file?) to to "fix" it. There wasn't a lot of detail in your photos, but it looks like it has some "handling marks" on the piece. Sorry, but I'm at work so I can't look up the serial number for it. As far as value, assuming nothing is mechanically wrong with it, I think somewhere around the $250.00 - $350.00 mark would probably be okay.

Can somebody with better eyes than mine tell whether or not the rear sight notch has been modified? It looks awful deep and square to me, like somebody wanted to get a faster, sharper sight picture. I like it! I would have to do something about that hammer that Bubba "improved." Bobbing or replacement come to mind. That's a sweet little Model 60 otherwise, and as such I'd be "right proud" to own and carry it.

If you don't like the hammer, you might be able to get a replacement.
All in all it looks like a nice Smith, congrats on your purchase.
Imagine the stories all these old Smiths could tell....like......Dang, when is he going to take me out of his smelly sock drawer!!

I would get the hammer fixed or grind the spur off. Have someone competent check the gun over. IMHO a Model 60 is a great carry gun. I will never sell mine.

I agree grind down the hammer or get a new one. That may be hard to find. Last, yes it does lok like someone took a grinder to the rear sight.

Pics did not work for me to see any detail. What he said. Would put a new hammer on if current couldn't be dressed up. Bob

I too have a 60-7 (s/s) with the hammer spur ground off by the previous owner. It has not affected it negatively. Obviously done to prevent snagging.

Danny, you have an earlier model 60 which is a fine little gun in the original frame size, like a model #36 or #637. Since it is a non dash model, it was NOT rated +P by Smith & Wesson. However, Dick Metcalf wrote an interesting article some years back in which he related a conversation with S&W's lead engineer. It was stated that these little J-frames could actually shoot +P loads, but not a steady diet. According to Blue Book, a M60 in 90% is $250. Since the hammer has been butchered, the best thing to do is to cut the spur off and polish the cut area. Cut spur on these guns does not detract from value and is considered an acceptable modification as these guns are meant to be used as a double action gun. In the $250-275 range, there are sure to be buyers if you want to sell it.

Rear sight notch is factory standard, same as my model #60

Zea: I have a 60-7 also and ordered it because it is rated +P by Smith & Wesson. After the purchase, I called customer service who immediately confirmed that the 60-7 is factory rated for +P ammo.

That's right. I only shoot +P out of it at the target range. A fine little carry wheelgun. Disappears into a pocket holster and then disappears into my pocket.

Well I tried, but the photos were not clear and large enough for me to tell what is going on. Better and larger format pics would be good for some more meaningful answers.
