Smith Wesson v comp

I recently acquired a Smith Wesson 629-5 v comp 2.6 inch barrel, serial # LNF 01xx. Not finding much info on it. Can anyone help? Thanks

Welcome to the Forum. Congrats on your new six shooter. The SCSW 4th Edition describes your gun having a 4" barrel. Are you measuring from the cylinder face or the frame? Should be the cylinder face. Sounds like a very nice gun to dive into the 44 magnum world.

Judging from the "LNF" serial number prefix, I would guess it is listed as a 3". A relatively scarce model, (about 200 produced for RSR). Pics would help immensely. Do you have the original box, State of Mass. certificate, etc.? The big bore snubs are kind of my thing, that's a nice one!!

RSR is a distributor similar to Lew Horton that used to special order unusual gun projects from the factory. It looks like you got the even more rare gun that BRatliff described above. Winner winner chicken dinner!

Congrats, as I thought that is the 3" 629-5 V-Comp. One of 206 produced for the distributor RSR. Not a common model by any means. Do you have anything else that goes with the revolver? It should have came with an aluminum PC case. The grips pictured are not original, it should have came with flat sided combat grips. I believe they are referred to as Morado's.

According to my research there were 206 629-5 V-Comps and 208 627-3 V-Comps produced. This information was obtained from copies of factory letters. If you do a search for 3" V Comp production numbers you will find the thread I started some years ago. All of the Performance Center revolvers in my collection have the S/N on the top strap and butt of the grip frame.

Nice piece! I owned one of these for a time. In my younger, stupider days I let it go. I will say it was a handful with full house 44 magnum loads. I have a 3 inch “Deluxe” now that I’ve put flat sided combats on. With light loaded 44 magnum rounds it’s tolerable for me.

Is this that of which you speak? TPF prefix. The flat combats will be replaced with something beautiful and functional from the Culinas. It came in an aluminum Performance Center case.
