i had a model 19 and had a python barrel put on it,
it shot great, i got rid of it some years later. i wanted to know
who can give me the straight poop, can a python barrel go on a smith 586? all the ones i have seen are on ruger security six, or model 19/66 the 586 is so close to the python, i think it would look great. anyone know for sure if it can or can not be done.

thanks.

My guess is even if the barrel and frame threads were to match up, the Python barrel on a 586 frame would not line up the ejector rod properly. Also, since the 586 has the heavy underlugged barrel, isn't the vent rib the only difference? I think the 586/686 pretty much did away with the "Smithon" conversions; at least, I have never seen one.

Seems to me as I recall that my Cousin Jack threaded a Diamond Back 38 Special Bbl. on a Model 10 K-Frame.
It was back in the early 70's, Jack was a Buffalo Police Lieutenant and an excellent PPC Shooter. Don't really know what happend to the gun but it sure looked awesome!

anaconda look alike

Some think the Taurus (now exhale) model 44 44Mag and model 608 357 Mag (they share the same frame-608 is 8 shot) look similar to a Colt's Anaconda. I have them both, and, while I am a S&W fan, the 608 I recently got has the best out of the box action of any hand gun I have shot. I took it to the range Friday, and the screw driver never touched the sights. Now, I'm not a big fan of their service dept here in Miami, but the folks in Brazil are doing their part. The only change I have made is the addition of hogue wood grips, they really complete this revolver for me. Try one, you might just like it! Flapjack

One of the ideas behind using a Python barrel on a S&W frame to create a "Smython"/"Smolt" was to have the Colt rifling -- which was said to be more accurate with 148gr lead hollow-base wadcutter rounds -- paired with the S&W lockwork. This was apparently pretty popular with the PPC crowd, which made extensive use of the revolver and 148gr HBWC round, and it helped to wring every bit of accuracy out of a gun as was possible.

The straight poop is Python barrels have to be rethreaded to install them on S&W K, N and Ruger Security Six frames. Members have posted pictures of revolvers with those three frames wearing Python Barrels. I'd be very supprised if Pythons and L frames had the same thread. Smolts/Smythons and Cougars would probably have to compete against unlimited revolvers in PPC because distinguished revolver class requires all parts except the stocks to be factory. Any PPC champs in S&W land feel free to correct me, but I doubt it could be demonstrated that Python barrels are more accurate than the 1" diameter bull barrels that go on unlimited PPC revolvers or even 586/686 barrels. That leaves the ventaliated rib as the only benifit to justify the expense of rethreading a Python Barrel for an L frame.

Now I have a question for you. If I have a full lug 629 barrel installed on a Ruger Super Redhawk, will it be a Rugwesson or a Smuger?

My colt python was an older one from the 70's and using the speer 140gr JHP's with the 6'' barrel i could ping small rocks on the berm at 100yds at will. It would of made a great 357mag for hunting but bad times hit and i parted with it. Bill

Smolt

I have a model 15 K frame with a 357 python barrel I have pics in the 61 to 80 revover forum There are lots of posts very informative Check it out!

Since Colt Pythons used two different threads, the later threads might be easier to fit to to a "L" frame S&W.

The original threads used by all Colt DA revolvers were .5634-32 tapered threads per inch.
The Python had TWO pins in the front sight.

Later the threads were changed to the same threads as used on the Mark III/King Cobra revolvers, which were .562-36 threads per inch.
These Python barrels had ONE pin in the front sight as a means of identifying the New Style barrels.

I have a pair of Smolts, a 19-3 nickle 6" Python barrel and a blued 19-3 that was round butted with a 4" Python Barrel by Davis(may be one of the best looking wheelguns IMOP)

they shoot GREAT! and are alot of fun to show folks :D

yeah I will post some pics

The later single pin front sight Python barrels will screw right into a 586 or 686 Smith & Wesson L frame. The ejector rod slot has to be milled open enough to accept the larger S&W ejector rod, but it does center up OK. The threads are too long and by the time you shorten it to get correct B/C gap, you will need to recut the forcing cone. Been there done that.

The barrel swap can be done. The problem is finding a smith that is willing to do the work. Few smith still do true custom work on revolvers. Most just do the standard stuff. If you find someone willing to work it may cost around 1K.

It has been my experience that both my 3" and 6" Smythons shoot as well as their all Colt Python counterparts. I am specifically talking about smoothness of actions and accuracy. Both of these Smythons were built on S&W Model 19-5 frames.

I am looking for gunsmith to install a Python barrel onto a Model 15. Who would you recommend?
