New Guy ! with questions, I just brought home a S-W 1917 Brazilian (1937) ( 45ACP) it's not in very good condition, been RODE HARD, put away wet, stored in back of a pick up bed for ever and 13 days. it is parkerized(barely) and someone has whittled the front sight down to a nubbin, beats me why. question.. did S-W or Brizil parkerize these handguns? #2 . did the Brazilian have only the half moon front sight, or were their any others. this 45acp shoots fairly good, about 3.5 to 4.0 inchs at 25yds.( 6 shots) and 7-7.5 in. high, and 4 inch left. this from a old revolver. It's some loose in the cylinder, but i think that this can be fixed with a little work. This is my first 1917 and was bought as a shooter not to collect. groups shot with winch. white box 230 RNFMJ. THANKS GUY'S Greg Bayes from Kentucky !!

Welcome to the Forum, Greg.

Do a search on the Brazilian models. Lots of threads on this revolver to read.

I've seen some that were Parkerized. Don't know who did them, though I did know a gunsmith who Parked a number of guns, including M10s and at least one 1917.

I've only seen the half moon sights on these. It could be repaired by slotting the base and pinning in another sight. You could use a ramp if you like, as this is a shooter.

My 1946 dated Brazilian has a "Parkerized" type of finish. I think it was a dull S&W finish originally, then not cared for but "well used" in Brazil. With it shooting that high you'd want to correct that. Muley Gill suggests the same option I would.

Muley Gil, H. Richard, Guys, THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE !!! and thanks for answering my questions. I have been reading every thing i can find on this forum, I figure to do some work on the cylinder X crane, new bushings, ect. Richard, your Brazilian looks to be in better shape than mine. I think i can turn it into a good shooter in a while, finances permitting. Talk to you-all later. Greg Bayes from Ky.

Most ot them I have seen are not good looking, but they do shoot. Mine is from the late '40's second barch, but made from WWI parts. AFAIK, they all had the half moon front sight.
