I have been using A-Zoom snap caps for the past few years. They offer them in pretty much every caliber and they last quite a while. They are a dark red color to remind you that they are practice rounds and not live ammo. I have heard of people using spent cases for dry-fire practice, but I believe that's asking for trouble if you think you're practicing and then accidentally fire a live round off in your home (or conversely, you think you have a loaded gun, but it is just full of spent cases).

Plus one on the A-Zoom snap caps. I've used them in every handgun I have. They are durable and the red definitely makes distinguishing between real ammo and dummy ammo a snap.

Be careful while shopping for rim fire snap caps. Many are labeled "not for dry fire...". Unlike center fire snap caps with a spring loaded center, most rim fire are solid with no way to absorb the shock.

And are cheap then after you use them you can then use them for what they were made for.

Be careful while shopping for rim fire snap caps. Many are labeled "not for dry fire...". Unlike center fire snap caps with a spring loaded center, most rim fire are solid with no way to absorb the shock.

Some are listed as "Action Proving Dummy Rounds".

I once saw a photo of a .22 revolver (probably a model 17) with drywall anchors. Yellow but the person did not mention the size. I thought that was genius and have been meaning to put them into my 17 and 617. Not so much for a bunch of dry firing but just in case someone isn't listening to me when I am showing the gun off and say not to dry fire.

I keep them in all my 22s. They're less than $4 per 100.

You can buy a bag of plastic 22 snap caps from Brownells for little money. They are designed to be disposable. Use them until they get a little beat up and change them out for new ones. All of my 22 cal. handguns, revolvers and autos, have a full compliment installed at all times. They are designed as snap caps and will cycle through autos. They not only work but are quite inexpensive.
