In at least one of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Holmes sent Watson a wire, telling him, "Meet me at such-and-such", and to "take precautions".

Watson explained that that meant he was to bring his "old army revolver" along.

I always "take precautions".

Latin for "be prepared for all things". About 15 years ago, when I was
starting as an instructor, a lady called me and thanked me for telling the
class to always be ready because they don't know where or when the
threat will come. Apparantly a guy had crashed into her front door and
she had her "little .44" right there by her lounger and she was able to
quickly neutralize the threat. I took the phrase at that time motivated
by that incident.

Two "rights" and "responsibilities" I take seriously.

In the late 80s I had the good fortune to go on a temporary duty assignment to Bergen, Norway, to work with their Air Force on a project. The Norwegian wing commander had our team to his home for an ice-breaker with our counterparts. One of the guys told me it's Norwegian law that if you don't vote in two consecutive elections you loose your right to vote [and whine].

Barbara and I serve as election judges at our tiny precinct of 56 registered voters. We usually enjoy a 100% turnout on election day. Some say it's "the" social event not to be missed: munchies--especially the cookies, soft drinks, and all. No unauthorized whiners here.

OK just to be sure I'm not confusing my handle and signature, when I
"retired" from hunting I gave all my long guns away. When I told my
wife she said you did what? Are you crazy? Thus my handle "Crazy Phil".
My signature is In Omnia Paratus. "Be prepared for all things
