So, just how bad is the lock issue?

I'm glad we're finally talking about this issue. It doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves!

I'm skeptical about reports of locks engaging during shooting. I think that if you were to delve deeper into those reports you would find that the operator either failed to properly maintain the gun or was using it improperly. There is a possibility that anything in the system could fail from the primer in the cartridge to the metal in the frame. Realistically, your chances of using your gun in a self defense situation are infinitesimal. On top of that add the infinitesimal chance that a failure will occur at the exact moment that you are protecting yourself and I think you can put those thoughts to the bottom of the priority list. Take the time to learn how to properly maintain your guns, shoot a lot and become as proficient as you can, forget about the untimely engagement of the lock.

Even if there is 5%, 3% or even 1% chance of it locking unintentionally, it makes me have to worry about one other potential failure if and when I would ever need it to work.

SALES dictate what a company produces! Lack of sales = redesign.

I SERIOUSLY doubt that ILS failures are even remotely close to 1%, probably not even 0.1% considering the many, many thousands out there.

Our overreaching, socialist government would have launched a phony investigation to save us from these hideously dangerous devices if ILS failures were a real issue. Cynicism aimed at our government definitely intended.

S&W revolver sales are doing just fine, so, the vast majority of the customers have spoken and the haters are in a tiny majority. Don

Opinions are great. They're yours. You can change them if you want or stay steadfast in them. But they are your opinions.

My opinion on the lock is that it doesn't bother me. Bought my first revolver for my 55th birthday in Jan 2008. A 686-6 plus with the lock. Thousands of rounds through it and only problem I had was hitting the target when I first got it. Practice took care of that. Still have it. Now fast forward to Dec 2014. I joined this forum and that's when I found out about the IL controversy. It's bother me to the point that I recently bought a twin to my 686-6 plus.

Opinions, that's all. ;)

I worry almost as much about a lock failure as I do being hit by a flying saucer crossing the parking lot this morning.

I don't even think they're any uglier than any other pin or screw in the side of the gun. As a matter of fact, some older S&W's have a pin in just about the same spot. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say those pins were ugly.

From the Boss...

What a refreshing thread.

I had never heard any of this data before.

For the record-
I don't like the lock. I wish the lock was not there. I also wish Thomas Jefferson would run for reelection.
I don't think my wishes are going to come true, so I suppose I will adapt to the current reality.

I believe that there have been lock malfunctions. I have not really investigated it, but the simple law of averages says there must be. Any machine can malfunction. That runs true from hammers to space shuttles. Believe it or not, I have seen S&W's that never had a lock fail to fire.

The fact is that you stand a far better chance of dying because of an auto malfunction or even an airplane malfunction than you do because of a lock malfunction.

So, we have a situation we all have to deal with.
This thread has pretty well covered the various options for dealing with it:
Love it
Hate it
Buy it
Don't buy it
Leave it
Remove it

The incessant whining and moaning gets tiresome.

Joe states it rather well- Quote:

Understandably they leave after a few visits never to return.

This is what I hate the most. We need to recruit new shooters, NOT discourage the new guys. Every time a newbie leaves, WE lose.

LOOK around at the features- look through the FAQ's and especially the User CP and get familiar with the features.
You DO have the IGNORE feature. It is in the User CP.
