SO what do you call it?

Wheelies are best done on an old Schwinn!

I vote: ammo, cartridge, round, shell, projectile or bullet depending on the context and try to call a spade a spade.

That bike CAN"T be old cause I remember them from when I was younger and I'm not OLD.
I am old enough to know better but young enough not to care. ;)

Both sides of my parents family called them either 'rounds' or sometimes 'patronen'. Probably because both sides are either of German or Austrian decent. Shells usually only applied to shotgun ammunition. Ammo isn't something commonly used by any of us except for my twin who strangely is anti-gun despite living in North Central Arkansas...don't ask me how that happened.

Almost anything but "bullets"...that's a component. Just like "reloading" is what I do when the mag is empty..."handloading" is what I do so I CAN reload!;)

Ammo or rounds. Two or more rounds is ammo. To me, a round can be singular, but there is no such thing as one ammo. Could be one round of ammo tho. Ammo is a collection of rounds. You can buy a box of rounds or a box of ammo. You can buy 50 rounds, but not 50 ammos. You can buy a box of bullets, but that's not ammo or rounds.

What's wrong with me

"there is no such thing as one ammo" I like that. I'm going to make it a sign in my reloading room.

My OCD really comes out discussing ammunition terminology.

I use "cartridge" typically to refer to the abstract concept of a specification (it's OAL, ballistic coefficient, etc) So if I were comparing the theoretical advantages of 460 roland over 45 acp, I would compare those "cartridges". I use "round" to refer to a real-world instance of a "cartridge" and "rounds" to refer to many instances of a particular cartridge. In OOP lingo, cartridge is the class, a round an instance of that class. A box of 50 45acp are "rounds" of 45 acp and also "ammunition", but "ammunition" is the term used when I have numerous instances of one or more types of ammo. My range bag with 44 mag and 44 special is full of "ammunition" and "rounds" of 44 mag and 44 special but it is not simply full of "rounds". An expended "round" becomes "brass" and "bullet" only ever refers to the projectile. I don't have any boolits only lead "bullets". I reserve "shell" for non-small arms ammunition which I broadly classify as anything 20mm or greater in caliber. Cap is strictly a verb for me, I cap, she caps we all capped.

Now use your words... When I reload ammunition, I make many rounds according to the specifications for those calibers from brass and bullets I have on my bench. I put the loaded rounds in boxes so I can quickly get my ammo together when I go to the range.
