So when was the last time you had some

Cooked poke salit (or any other cooked greens) with hot sauce is a match made in heaven.

Dad ate his greens with vinegar. Mom sat upwind.

I never liked vinegar on my greens. Sometimes I used pepper sauce, but if the greens were really good, I didn't need anything on them. Turnip greens, sometimes turnips on the side. Wilted lettuce or spinach w/bacon bits, or pieces of ham and some "red eye" gravy. Every once in a while we would have some water cress salad too. Lots of good things to eat growing up.
I didn't need no meat if my mom would serve pinto beans and macaroni and tomatoes. Mix em up. Pretty good.

What, no pot of pinto beans with bacon chunks cooked in it?
Maybe some fried 'taters & onions too.
The pinto beans and cornbread were always on wash day, which was Wednesday. Mom could do the wash and not spend as much time at the stove watching the beans. I can smell the pinto beans cooking!

It's certainly been a while since I've had any poke salad for sure. Used to have it at my grandma's house in Wheeler County. Enjoy.
Been awhile for me. My Aunt served it down in Gray county TX when I was a young lad. Plus my Uncle would put in about half acre of black eyed peas on his ranch. I would get to help pick them and shell them but hard to beat them fresh peas.

Alright, fellas, educate me. I'm thinking that the leaves are the only part that isn't toxic. Is that correct? Or is it that toxicity depends on the stage of growth?

I ran across a YouTube video recently in which an older Alabama gentleman was recovering from a serious medical episode after eating poke. He thought at the time that it might be the end of him, but the effects gradually wore off. I don't recall him telling us what part of the plant he ate -obviously the wrong one.

Regards,
Andy

Yep, that's where the "salad" can get people in trouble. They are greens to be cooked. Dad taught harvesting time was important too. When plant is young and the berries whitish, when the berries are green to purple no good. ( this is not FDA information) Just know thats what we followed and I can't remember anyone getting sick.

Hmmm, heard the song but didn't know what it was until I saw this pic. Good thing I don't have to go out and pick that stuff because I'd probably end up picking poison ivy instead.
