So who thinks .44s should be Special? pics...

My first (and only) .44 Special was a model 1950 Target. That was a fine gun; I wish I had it back.

A question for you all...
I may be misinformed regarding the "Lew Horton" guns. I thought they were: 24-3s and 624s...in reading several of the replies here, I think I need to ask..."which of these were Lew Horton guns?" Anyone?

PALADIN85020,
Wow! Very nice guns. That Colt looks like a safe queen...very nice.

Bob,
That 696 is on my "wish list"...Love the grips on your guns...I don't have a single set of smooth factories.

Old Griz,
If it were me, I'd put a little Kroil on it and let it set...what comes off comes off (with a soft rag). I don't think I'd attempt "fixing" rust on a blue finish...but I'm a chicken.

Dave,
Of course you would reply to this post!! That is a great picture! I love those engraved guns. The only "engraved gun" I have is the 3rd Model with "Pawn Shop" engraving. It's not quite the same is it?
The one with the 4" barrel that appears to be "Parkerized"...what is that gun?

Marksman,
You did well in your trades! I expect everyone who replied here (and half the Board's membership) dreams of such a gun. Congrats!
I imagine that Bowen gun is one to be "buried with".

Patrolman,
You need to come shoot! It's in the 70's with clear skies and you aren't out here wearing out my new 624???

yankee7809,
I agree with you and had told a buddy the same thing on Friday...I'd never EVER seen one for sale in person...just pics on line.
It was too nice and too unusual to walk away from.

Joni,
You are an agitator. And I think just a little ornery. I dare say you might just have a Special or two stashed away?!

Gil,
Sweet looking guns. I feel fortunate to have a couple older Specials...neither as beautiful as the one you have displayed.
Congrats on a sweet old S&W.

David,
That Triple-lock is fantastic. It's a gun I'll probably never own as I never see many...and I can't keep up with the prices...whew! Both your Specials are dandys.

Michael,
Nice! My first Special was the pictured 624 with a 4" barrel...I've shot that gun quite a bit!

Sonny,
So far, I've been able to hold on to every Special I've managed to purchase...I hope I can keep it up...sometimes you gottta do what you gotta do...my divorce forced a bunch of my guns back on the market.

Bob,

Oh, that's just a little 38-44 converted to .44Spl.
Bead blasted and blued. Handy everyday using iron...

Saw a 24 Lew Horton, with issued black leather holster, for sale at the Montrose Rod and Gun Club gun show last weekend (Montrose Colorado- Southwest Colorado near the San Juan mountain range). Was a 98% gun. Seller was asking $750 and immediately added that it was at least one hundred less than the current market going rate, which may or may not be correct.

I mention it only to show that they must still be floating around in that the Montrose show is a smaller venue than most and it was there for the taking. I would have taken it, but I have one identical to it and could not justify another.

Hello VonFatman
I Like the .44 Specials. Shown is what used to be my Transitional .44 Special Pre-24 that shipped very early in 1951. I feel it was still a Transitional due to slower sales of these revolvers after their introduction in 1950. I have a very good friend who has helped me immensely in my collection of S&W revolvers for the past 9 Years and he is a True .44 Special Lover. I had found a super nice second series hand eject in .44 Special that I sent him a few years back, and he did not have a Pre-24 Target revolver, so I felt it would be more appreciated in his stable, and I owed him the Gratitude of this swap. He swapped me a Nice Pre-27 Nickel five screw revolver with the desirable 3-1/2" Barrel for it, so we both ended up happy. Below is pictures of it and it's Transitional Box it came with, along with a recently Purchased Model 24-3 That is Unfired I Picked up to fill the caliber hole my swap had left... Hammerdown

Mickey, Especially nice Pre 24. Is it the photo lighting or does it have an especially light struck S&W logo on the sideplate just like my Pre-24 s/n S1342XX? Russ

Russ, must be the lighting. It appears like a good clean logo to me. Mine's Ser# S1399xx

There are WAY too many pretty guns on this thread! Allow me to fix that. :D

The ugliest .44 ever to come out of the S&W factory--Model 296:

Come on now, I love my 296, Its my daily carry gun and its right in front of me. At least wait untill it leaves the room before you make fun of it :D

I like it so much I just bought its bastard cousion the 242

I handled a 296 while at Cabela's and gave it back to the clerk, I do stupid things and that was one of them. I was actually looking for a 696 at the time.

24-3 & 624 & saa

Yep, they're special to me and I carry them a lot.

My .44 Special collection:

Yeah, I know... the two current production 629s have deeper reamed chambers... but, they are available today - and SS - and definitely Keith-level capable. Sadly, the L-frames on the left are 'lighter duty' .44 Specials.

Mickey D,
You take some of the best photos! You really arrange the pics well. Those are some wonderful guns!
I agree, that pre-24 is outstanding!! A real drooler.

Jimmymac46,
That's a good solid market value report...nothing like CURRENT values to understand what a gun is worth.

Joni,
You are "bad" to the bone...it's one reason I enjoy your pests/posts!

Hammerdown,
Nice transitional & 24-3! Hard not to enjoy those. Nice pis too...you do a nice job of cleaning the surface of the guns so that they really shine!

DC7,
Ugly? No way..."Utilitarian"!!!!

peyton,
I'd not have laid that gun down unless it was WAY over-priced!!

kscowboy,
I don't carry any of mine other than to and from the range...but I expect they are great for that purpose. Several have mentioned they ccw the 296...I know a bunch of folks ccw the Bulldog.

Stainz,
Very nice! I like that 696!!!

Bob
