For what it worth if you havent cleaned the brine tank in awhile, do it...I just cleaned mine because of no soft water, brine tank had a 60# solid block of salt, totally plugged up, that will not happen again, pain to clean out and a pain too dispose of the water logged chunk of salt

It was an experience just like yours that convinced me to go the extra cost of pellets. An awful chore and mess! And what biblical authorities wrote is true, it does sterilize the earth it lands on, nearly forever.
 
Try putting some vinear right in the tank. It'll loosen up calcium and scale on your valve and drain,about one or two cups will do in a tank each month. Also potassium is avalable at yet another expence, but wont kill the grass or envroment. The other 'Bennie is no absortion of sodium through the skin. Take care.
