I received a 1977 29-2 a few years back as a gift. I've been shooting it ever since with no issues. Mainly reloads that I'd consider to be slightly hot 44 specials - 1100 fps with 240 gr lead bullets.

After recently viewing pix of other 29-2's, I saw that the front of my sight assembly was raised up off of the top strap by quite a bit. I tried tightening the front screw on the assembly but it wouldn't budge. I removed the front screw and the front of the sight assembly sprung upward throwing the screw into the 4th dimension corner of my shop never to be seen again. I have two questions.

1. The pic of the gun shows the sight assembly in place missing the front assembly screw. The front of the sight strap is way up off of the top strap. This can'e be right, right?

2. Can I get replacement parts for this from S&W? I guess a smith could bend back the assembly if needed but is that front screw available?

Thanks for any input.

Tony

Actually it is not really bent. They are actually like that. The rear sight appears to be screwed all the way down. That causes part of it. The screw should be available from S&W. Order two. Unless it's changed the part number should be 037350000.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the reply. I'll call the service center tomorrow and get the screws.

When replacing that tiny front screw, I use another tool to press the springy sight down.
Doesn't feel "right" to pull it down with just those tiny threads.
A couple I've had that wanted to loosen themselves were secured with purple low strength Loctite.
Degrease well first. and a tiny dab is plenty.

Very good advice.
