I found some .38 spl American Eagle ammo (130 gr FMC) and wondering whether $110 shipped is a good price for 250 rnds.

I also want to get some suggestions from the pros. I'm looking for .38 spl ammo that fits three basic requirements (importance to me is listed in descending order): low recoil, clean, and relatively inexpensive. Can you please recommend the ammo that fits these criterea and a place to buy?

Don't know if it matters, but just in case--ammo will be used in 686 with S&W custom shop 1:14 twist 4" barrel.

Thanks!

Check what kind of deal Mastercast and, or Georgia Arms can give you on ammo. You may be able to beat that price, but in all honesty, I just don't know because I handload. For $110 you would have much of a decent reloading set up.

Sir, $110 for 250 rounds works out to 44 cents a shot, which seems pretty high for 130-grain FMJs. I'd shop around a bit more. Some of the usual suspects include Midway, Ammoman.com, Natchez Shooters' Supply, etc.

As has been noted, if you have time and space, reloading really is the better way to go. You won't save any money, but you'll be able to shoot a lot more per dollar.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

at the gun show I got .38 spl American Eagle ammo 5 boxes for 17.00 a box..its a little dirty but it goes bang and good for target shooting

Thanks to all of you guys for responding. I'll take a look at prices at AmmoMan and other places. Still wondering, however, what ammo will work best for me. I'm looking for low recoil (probably WC is my best option?), clean, and not too harsh on the wallet.

P.S. Please don't suggest reloading. I know it would be cheaper. Don't have the place, the equipment, or desire to do it though.

While your 148 wadcutter will be your softest shooting round, it usually uses swagged lead and will require more cleaning. Any jacketed round would be cleaner but will probably have more recoil. You should be able to find American Eagle, UMC or Winchester white box jacketed rounds under $20bx around once all the hoarding stops.
