It is my first S&W and I know very little about the gun itself, so please feel free to comment.

I believe all on this forum, including myself will tell you the 686 is a classic revolver. You did well.

Nice gun I have many handguns but the 686 4in gets shot more than all the rest combined handles great and easy to handload for.

I bought the same exactest one a few weeks ago and love it.

Welcome to the gentlemens' forum. You have an all time classic, they are just like a tank, with the exception that a tank might blow up some day. S&W simply out Pythoned the Python with a design that has to be deliberately mistreated to make anything go wrong with it, and even then it wll probably still work OK.
Happy shooting.

Congrats! Very nice piece. I had a early 80's 686 w/wooden grips and gave it to my son. Excellent performer. I now have a Ruger GP100 in blue steel to ease my pain. I miss the 686 but also miss BS revolvers.

I bought a 6" 686 in '89; immediately replaced the
wooden target grips with rubber Hogue's. Joining
this forum has given me a whole new appreciation for
those wooden grips, which are now back on. It's a very
accurate gun that I've enjoyed very much, and will never
get rid of. I've also had great luck with Simichrome polish
for shining it up a bit.

I bought one a couple of years ago from my local firearms emporium as well. Very nice piece, with a smooth trigger. I was able to get it for a very good price too. Right now, I am considering a second one with a 3" barrel.

Thanks to all. I just got a membership @ The Massachusetts Rifle Association and plan on spending many hours enjoying my new purchase.
