I recently acquired a nickel 39-2 that is in excellent shape. It is alleged to be unfired, and I can't find any evidence to prove otherwise.

The grips look rough in the photos, but those are reflections. I've handled a pile of 1st/2nd/3rd gens over the years, and have never seen one this clean. But I would call it 95%, just to be safe.

I also received a (I'm guessing) non-original box.

I only have a passing familiarity with the 39 series, so I have a few questions...

1. Do the slide release and safety look original? Most nickel 39-2's I've seen have blued (or black?) controls.

2. What's the age?

3. What approximate value would you place on this?

Thanks in advance!

Your pistol dates 1973-1974. I have seen a few over the years that have the Nickel controls but very few so I'm not sure about the originality of those. However, the box label is highly suspicious looking. First, it's orientated incorrectly. It should pasted be upside down on the top half of the box. The handwriting on the label looks too neat and deliberate and the label is incomplete. Value on a Nickel 39-2 in the original boxes can bring around $700-$900. Depending on condition. Good luck.

I figured there was no way in heck the box label was original. I've got a couple boxes from that approximate era, and none of them look like that. I just wanted a second set of eyes on it.

I more curious about the controls than anything. The long and short of it is that I want a really clean, great condition shooter. If this gun is in fact all original and unfired, I'd honestly rather sell it to someone who will appreciate it more than me. I want something a little more suited for a (guilt free) range toy.

If it turns out that it's not an all original gun, I'll shoot the absolute dickens out of it.

I believe the box is the correct type but for some reason the writing on the label makes me think that part is a reproduction.
