Something Different

Yesterday, as I was driving to Willey Bros in Reno, I told myself that I was going to look for something different, something other than S&Ws or Colts. It didn't take me long to spot this ASNIB Winchester M70 Super Grade in 7x57 w/Leupold VX3i 3.5-10. Liking M70s, metric cartridges and being super impulsive, it left with me. It'll pair nicely with my M70 Classic Featherweight in 6.5x55.

Works for me. Those cartridges are the best example of excellent things that certain people would never use because "They weren't invented here".

Beautiful M70 - love the caliber.

I was at the big Lakeland show maybe thirty years ago with a friend. He found this incredible three leaf open sighted custom Mauser bought for a song. I'll never forget his excitement, but he said "I'll probably never find ammo. It's a .275 Rigby." Said we could probably stop at Walmart on the way home and find a few boxes. After his puzzled look I casually mentioned .275 Rigby was English for 7x57 Mauser.

Always fun when metric and Imperial get turned around. I was at an auction where the auctioneer read what was on the side of a nickeled Ballester-Molina, '11.25x23mm'. Room fell oddly silent, so I looked around trying to keep a straight face. Guy behind was clearly salivating for this gun, saw me, and then asked, "But what the hell caliber is that?" I did my best knowledgeable face and said, "Oh, it's 45 in metric." He mulled what I said for a moment and then the penny dropped. Two minutes later it was his gun.
