My son will be flying into Dallas next week and driving to Austin for the SXSW music festival.
Other than a stop in Belton to pay respects to family at the North Belton Cemetary, he has no fixed agenda.
Any fun sights or restaurants that should not be missed?

Texas Rangers museum and Dr. Pepper museum in Waco. If Willie Nelson isn't playing at SXSW, he might check and see if he's going to be at Carl's Corner (just north of Hillsboro).

Around Lake Travis there are some scenic views and there are many restaraunts that overlook the lake and can be a lot of fun at night. Sixth street is where a lot clubs are downtown and there is some decent sight-seeing all around the downtown area and state capitol.

Get out West to the Hill Country
Mt. Bonnell
Texas State Capitol Bld
Austin Ghost tour
Treaty Oak

Food:

The Oasis at Lake Travis (at sundown)
County Line BBQ (yum)
Katz's Deli
Alligator Grill

McBride's Guns http://www.mcbridesguns.com/index.htm

Threadgills is a good place to eat and has good live music; historic place for live Austin music. The downtown area has many good places to eat along the drag (Guadalupe St.) Austin is a nice town but their motto is "Keep Austin Weired" lotta weirdos.

Look around at the liberals! Probably the only place you can see such a gaggle of them. They are a endangered species most other places in Texas. I heard they are protected due to their possible extinction every where except Austin.

Only place in Texas that I didn't care for was Austin . . .

I'm sad to say I also didn't care for it the last time I was there (late '80s). I'm biased in favor of the place because of long family associations -- I was born there in the waning days of WWII. But even two decades ago everything that I remembered about it as appealing had been obscured by urban sprawl and glass-skin high-rise office buildings that are a dime a dozen in any big city these days. I've seen recent photos, and today it's even worse. Austin used to be special. Now it's not.

But then, a lot of places used to be special and now they're not. So why pick on Austin.

Everybody tells me good music, good restaurants. I wouldn't know. Doubt I'll be back.

If the weather is nice and warm, Barton Springs. J. Frank Dobie loved the place and did some of his writing there. I liked it because the water was clear and the girls something else.
