I moved to Vermont a couple of years ago from South Florida. I love Vermont and love catching Smallmouth Bass there. I'm in South Florida visiting family, but brought a kayak and my fishing gear. Got into some really nice Peacock Bass yesterday! While I in no way miss living in South Florida, I do miss fishing year round and these beautiful fish!

The rivers and lakes in Florida hold may "New" types of fish that many people have never seen, let alone catch.

Great picture of an "Illegal" that found a home in that state.

I love the coloring on that fish, as well as my favorite on a Golden Trout
that is almost like a cousin, that lives at 8,000 ft. elevation, vs sea level.

In Panama we would get an 18' jon boat from MWR and fish for peacock bass on Lake Gatun. If you didn't fill the boat up by noon you weren't fishing. They would hit a piece of soda straw on a 2/0 hook when you ran out of #*@% ditch minnows. A big fish fry for JOTC cadre would ensue.

It's prudent to dress like the OP when fishing in the sunlight in South Florida.
Polaroid sunglasses with leather on the sides as well.

We've been fishing the Keys for decades.
Across the street from our home, where Parkland meets the Springs, some large Peacocks are abundant.
We only catch fish that we eat, but catch the local Bass when teaching kids before going offshore or in the backcountry waters.

Snook, Snapper, Redfish, Sea Trout and Hogfish chunks poached and dipped in butter.
Never ate Bass but heard some people say it's okay.

Me too!

I loved the Peacock Bass fishing in Gatun Lake! I also hooked into several other species of fish there, including an unexpected Tarpon which broke my leader on its first jump! :D

During the dry season, when little water came over the Gatun dam and salt water backed up into the Rio Chargres we would catch barracuda by trolling the river. The Tarpon Club by the Gatun dam served Barracuda ceviche.

A technique we used on peacock bass: When one got on the hook, don't reel it in. Just lay the rod down on the floor. Peacocks are very curious and will school around their hooked buddy to see what was going on. Put your bait near the hooked fish and hang on.
