Even up here need an air conditioner occasionally. Just put the over 10 yr old Kenmore window unit back in yesterday. Appears ready to shake, rattle and roll for another summer. And someone was right, am not outside much when it gets over 80 f.
Fins are at a 45 deg and drips into a 2x18" galvanized pan with a bottom drain line to outside. Half gallon of almost hot water followed by a quart plus of water with a "bloop bloop" worth of bleach followed 5-10 minutes later with another half gal. of warm water with mostly every filter change for many years now.
I've lived in south Texas for 50 years and maintained my A/C systems for most of that time. Both the normal and overflow condensate lines can be easily cleaned with simple bleach. You use it in your washing machine all the time without any ill effects and it's cheap. ZEP makes an enzymatic product that many plumbers and A/C techs recommend. It's about $5/gal. The longer you live in the South, the more you'll learn about optimizing A/C service. The latest wrinkle is a soft start module to decrease current inrush to prolong compressor life and make it easier to start with an emergency generator.
